Sitting on your couch reading Startup Cafe whilst yet again trying to water down that ever worse Sunday morning hangover? Thinking this is another week end wasted away, another week is about to start; your shirts are not ironed and the prospects of that corporate job of yours aren’t that bright? Well get up, brush your teeth and head East. Silicon Milkroundabout brings together 100+ UK start-ups offering 500+ technical jobs.

Where

When
Sunday the 30th of October until 5pm

The folks at Adzuna have been kind enough to send me some of the data they’ve collected:

There are over 150 companies hiring at SiliconMilkRoundabout this weekend with over 500 technical jobs up for grabs at London start ups (with salaries from £20k to £100k

There are 3,134 Graduate technical jobs available in the UK and over 1,000 in London currently listed on Adzuna.co.uk, the UK’s most comprehensive job search engine.

The average Banking IT salary is £57k which is 19% higher than the average tech start up salary. Tech startups offer greater job satisfaction and the upside of options, but this salary gap is what the start hiring community is up against.

23% of start ups currently hiring in London are offering stock to graduate tech employees; 0% of banks hiring graduates are offering stock.

Despite their age, workhorse languages such as C and C++ continue to remain at the top end of the software development landscape in terms of use and job potential. That being said, Ruby, Hadoop and HTML5 are the fastest growing “in demand” tech skills with employer demand up 70%+ year on year for all of these search terms

Graduate Mobile developers can demand a premium, with the average graduate salary for iPhone developers at £34k and Android developers at £35k, 20% higher than the average graduate tech job.

Despite what appears to be an abundance of tech jobs in the UK, 13.1% of computer science graduates remain unemployed (source: HESA). 7,000+ computer scientists graduated this summer from University in the UK.

Adzuna.co.uk collated every single tech job advertisement posted in the last month on over 150 different UK job boards, a total of 100,000 tech job ads. Using the advanced search technology that powers its job search engine, the data was semantically analysed based on “ad content” and salary rates. This data was then matched to the annnual statistics published by the Higher Education Statistics Agency (HESA) and the Office of National Statistics.

The game leads users on a geological trail of discovery around Arthur’s Seat, beginning and ending at Dynamic Earth.

The position requires basic iPhone dev skills, including experience with the maps functions and integrating multimedia and video.

Conrad Molleson, Artistic Director at Hoda, confirmed that the position will be paid, and that the app is just one element of a bigger plan:

If a student were to take it on it would be in the region of £500. A supervisor would be paid according to experience. We currently have an ECA student working on the Flash version and Heriot Watt have offered the use of their iPhones. We also have an engineering student from Leeds who’s looking at the GPS app development. Ultimately, we’re hoping for a ‘soft’ launch at Dynamic Earth for mid September.

As a bonus, Hoda has a talented team of artists providing compelling artwork for the app, as you can see in the preview video below. Interested? Send your CV to info[at]hoda.org.uk.

The other day we received a message on our Facebook page:

“Hey, I’ve just graduated from Glasgow university and want to get into the startup scene. Getting involved with a current startup seems to be what is mostly advised on the web as a good way to start, but I’ve been researching on the internet and can’t find anywhere where there is any info on startups that are hiring in Scotland or the UK for that matter, perhaps there aren’t any hiring outside people? Any advice on where to look or any other advice would be appreciated…”

This would be the perfect opportunity to introduce a new company called…wait for it…WorkInStartups, which helps people find exciting jobs in awesome startups.

Founder Diana Proca (formerly of Launch48) has been extremely busy over the last couple of months looking for jobs within UK startups to advertise on her site, and she’s found loads! There are lots of exciting roles for designers, developers, marketers, sales folk, managers as well as a variety of intern positions for people wanting to gain experience.

One limitation, quite a severe one for those not wanting to move out of Scotland, is that most of the roles advertised are London-based. But it is not intended to remain this way. So, calling all startups in Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dundee, Aberdeen and the rest of Scotland….if you would like to advertise for people who specifically want to work in startups, why don’t you submit vacancy details to diana@workinstartups.com or tweet @workinstartups. The last time I checked, it was completely FREE to do so!

We are a very exciting early stage startup developing a highly viral mobile web app, aimed at providing an innovative advertising solution for SMEs. We want someone who can contribute on more than a coding level, someone with an entrepreneurial streak who is capable of looking at the bigger picture, and someone with a passion to be part of something big—something disruptive!

We are Edinburgh based and need someone primarily proficient in HTML5, preferably with some experience of PHP and phonegap. A little understanding of java j2ee would also be handy, but not essential.

If you are interested and want to hear more, or know of anyone that maybe interested, please get in contact via admin@lipvine.com

Flexibility, challenging work, cool colleagues, and a tangible connection between your input and the company’s output—what’s not to like? Here’s two opportunities that are recruiting now (and both, in case you’re wondering, are paid):

1. C++ Programmer for part-time work, possibly leading to full-time employment

Speech Graphics Ltd, a technology startup in Edinburgh providing lip-sync middleware and services to the video games industry, is seeking a talented software engineer for a consultant position, possibly leading to full-time employment. The candidate will assist in the development of a commercial middleware application to perform automatic lip-synchronization for video games. We seek someone with the following qualifications:

C++ programming

GUI design experience

Excellent communication and teamwork skills

High technical and aesthetic standards

The following is also very desirable:

Experience developing a commercial product

Cross-platform development (e.g., wxwidgets)

Experience with computer animation

Speech Graphics offers an exciting, rewarding work environment in a highly interdisciplinary field—at the interface between speech technology and the dynamic video games industry. As we are still a small company, your contributions can have a great impact. Interested parties should send a CV to Michael Berger at berger [AT] speech-graphics.com

2. Summer internship (three months from May–August 2011) for developer with PHP and JQuery experience

Read4Sure are a Scottish web startup developing a cloud-based Intellectual Property (IP) management tool for small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). “Hawk IP” will have a creative and dynamic interface designed for ease of use by non-experts.

We’re looking for an enthusiastic developer to help build the service. This post would suit a talented student or recent graduate who can rise to the challenge of an agile environment—a constantly evolving spec, low paperwork burden, and an opportunity to contribute to the design and direction of the product.

We’ll be developing in PHP (Kohana framework) and extensively in JQuery, so experience in these is a definite plus. Linux and MySQL admin skills are desirable but not strictly necessary. We want good quality work, fast.

The position will be in our Linlithgow office, right on the historic High Street and a few hundred metres from the Palace and loch. It is a couple of minutes walk from the train station (20min from Edinburgh, also direct from Glasgow, Falkirk, Stirling, Dunblane etc.) and intercity bus stops.

Interested? Please send your credentials and a covering email explaining why you think you’re right for us, and why this post might be right for you, to careers [AT] read4sure.com.

P.S. Any questions about these job listings? Please let me (Hilary) know either in the comments below or by emailing hilary [AT] startupcafe.co.uk.
