University of Edinburgh Enterprise Expo 2009
By Hilary Hinger,
This week, the University of Edinburgh held its 5th annual Enterprise Expo. The event, highlighting the accomplishments of University staff and students who have launched their own businesses, attracted more than 250 staff, students, investors and business representatives.
Many attendees were impressed by the diversity of the businesses on show. “The most amazing thing for me was to see so much enthusiasm, so many diverse ideas and to see that being translated into viable businesses,” said Brett Sheffield, owner of Gladserv, a Dunfermline-based web-hosting company. “Scotland has so much potential.”
Doug Richard, former Dragon on BBC’s Dragons’ Den helped to open the event with a few comments about starting a business in a recession. “In every possible way things get better,” he said. “The risks go down.” With a record 50 companies exhibiting this year, it is clear that University staff and students have taken this message to heart.
