It’s about time! Entrepreneurs in Edinburgh can now enjoy coffee, tea, cupcakes, and free wifi without having to stress about their weekly budgets or office rent. A new cafe, run by yours truly at StartupCafe, is opening its doors this weekend in time for an Easter themed celebration.
The cafe has been many months in the making, and with generous funding finally secured in the new year, we’re delighted to finally make this resource available to local startups. Whether you have an idea you want to develop or a business to grow, you can take advantage of the cafe’s hotdesk offering and of course the free coffee and cakes. Part of the space is sectioned off into meeting rooms, so you can have a more private area to meet with clients or think in peace when needed. How about storing papers and equipment? A vast number of lockers and drawers are ready to be claimed for your convenience.
We’ve been keeping it under wraps to avoid competition starting up, and that’s been surprisingly tough since of course we love sharing news with everyone. But if you’ve wondered what the new building being constructed in George Square was for, well, the secret is out. The ‘StartupCafe’ sign going up would have given it away sooner or later!
‘The blog has been fun, but really we couldn’t wait to get the actual cafe going’ Kate confessed. Our goal is to ease the burden on startups who currently rely on their living rooms, cafes in the city, or offices they can’t afford, and provide a more startup-friendly work environment. One of our supporters explained, ‘6th Floor Appleton Tower is awesome but not everyone can fit there, and you have to walk up two flights of stairs to tap the best coffee machine’. Cupcake celebrations will be enforced when guests at StartupCafe reach exciting milestones such as securing funding, launching products, or winning awards, and occasionally visitors will be interviewed on the spot.
Cafe hours are still being negotiated, but to start out we’ll have it running 10am-3am Monday through Sunday. Entrepreneurs may find it particularly useful on Easter, when few other places are open but work still needs to be done. We’ll be holding an egg hunt at 2pm Sunday 4th April, and each egg you find can be redeemed for a free hour of legal, accounting, or marketing advice from a local firm.
We’re very excited for this milestone in our own development and welcome any feedback you have on the new StartupCafe cafe!
Whew – I’m glad we can finally reveal our grand master plan! No longer will I have to look embarrassed when people ask me whether there’s anything else to startupcafe apart from the blog.
Oh and in case our readers were wondering – our question of “what’s your favourite skint meal?” in the 60 second interview was a thinly disguised way of building up our menu. Watch out Starbucks – startupcafe is coming!
Congratulations to all startup cafe team! Great going 🙂
Thanks so much Grishma! Hopefully see you there this weekend, or else sometime next week!
Congratulations to you all!
