Scotland’s largest mobile apps company rebrands to Kotikan, reflecting its growth into new sectors. The rebrand reflects the business’ evolution from a provider of location-based apps to covering the full spectrum of mobile development. From its beginnings in a bedroom in 2007, Kotikan is now the biggest and fastest growing app developer in Scotland.
Within the past year, the company has more than doubled in head count; has seen a five fold increase in revenue from 2009 to 2010; and is already on target to grow fivefold again in 2010 to 2011. Kotikan, which benefits from a strong relationship with the University of Edinburgh’s world leading informatics department, demonstrates that technology start-up companies can thrive in Scotland despite the pressure to move to London or Silicon Valley.
Kotikan’s industry expertise has already been recognised internationally through regular appearances on panels and at mobile summits throughout Europe. Kotikan has worked with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Scottish Qualifications Authority and most recently Skyscanner. The Skyscanner All Flights, Everywhere iPhone app hit the number one free travel app spot in 28 countries and reached one million downloads – faster than any other Scottish produced app.
The company has pioneered event guides and location based applications, starting with the Edinburgh Festival Fringe in 2009. Since then, Kotikan’s apps have been used for numerous festivals, setting the benchmark for mobile event guides. Although the market is growing at a tremendous rate, Kotikan’s organic growth has exceeded this without any venture capital investment.
