The Launch Lab – the brainchild of Mirren Fischer and Georgia Artus – is looking for pitchers for their monthly pitching event on 8th June. The idea is that each pitcher stands in front of the group to give a 3-5min pitch on who they are and what their business is. Then the rest of the group will give constructive feedback about the content and presentation skills. There’s 3 spots open.

Sign up on meetup.com, and contact Mirren if you’re interested.

This week we are especially excited to interview Jack Perry, former Chief Exec of Scottish Enterprise 2003-2009. Having brought about many positive changes at SE, he is now running Perry- Net Limited and serves on the board of Robert Wiseman Dairies (check your fridge). Born in the states but settled in the UK, Jack has a cool accent and is a delightfully friendly guy. One of our favourite quirky facts as well!

What’s your startup/organisation? Perry- Net Limited

Give us your company culture in 3 words: Insight, Disproportionate  Value

What’s the next big challenge or hurdle the organisation needs to overcome? Winning new business!

What’s the personal dream (in one sentence)? Continue Reading »

You’ve had a great business idea. You’ve drafted out a rough plan of how it’s going to work. You’ve done a ton of research, you’ve even managed to scrape enough money together to buy some basic equipment to run the business. You’ve found loads of info about setting up a company online, and found a free advisors to tell you about company formation and funding. Now, people keep on mentioning intellectual property rights being important to nearly every business out there, but not yours…right? Probably wrong.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) are often potentially the most valuable thing that a company owns. And yet many people (a) don’t realised this, (b) can’t identify the IP in their business, (c) may know it’s there but don’t keep a track or record of it, (d) don’t protect it and (e) don’t exploit it. Crazy eh? Think – “Hello sir – you appear to have a pot of gold sitting in your unlocked room here – mind if I take it? Thanks…” Similar thing. Continue Reading »

Plenty going on this week, but do check out the upcoming ‘Sign up now for…’ list at the bottom too if you want first dibs on tickets!

Pitching, pitching, pitching… It’s a subject we hear about endlessly, yet pitching performances locally rarely seem to satisfy an investor audience. Want to blow someone’s socks off next time you’re trying to sway new customers, getting investors to part with their cash, or even recruiting for your team? TechCrunch Europe and UK Trade & Investment have teamed up to offer free pitch training in London on Monday 7th June – so go sharpen your skills and give us a new standard to aspire to!

Info from Mike Butcher’s recent post on TechCrunch, so thanks Mike:

TechCrunch Europe and UK Trade and Investment are organising a series of pitch workshops to help startups hone their pitch for events. These are free.

The next on is on 7th June 2010. It is free to attend for qualified UK-based startups, which means any startup in Europe that also has a UK base of course. It gives you a chance to possibly pitch at a forthcoming TechCrunch Europe event as we tend to look at those startups coming through this UKTI filter.

Think back to last weekend… Friday, Saturday, Sunday… how much did you accomplish? Well ok, it may have been pretty busy, but what if someone suggested you should brainstorm, develop, and launch a startup in a single weekend? In what sounds like SICamp for web apps, Launch48 is coming up in the London area 4-6th June. Tickets are £29.95 for students, or £49.95 for grown ups. Thoughts from Sam Collins of Bloop and TechMeetup below, followed by the Launch48 details – it sounds incredible, so grab your ticket asap if you want to take part…

Launch48 is a really badass event – hackers and startup people get together for a weekend and build and launch a startup in 48 hours. I know there’s a bunch of things *like* this around the world, but Launch48 have been doing it for a while and they do it really well. I was at Seedcamp with a company from Launch48 last year – so yeah, that’s the sort of standard we’re talking about. Continue Reading »
