Sorry for being late this week, just been madness, but still a number of cool events to jump into…
The Launch Lab is a weekly session geared toward anyone who owns or is starting their own business. A highly varied group of energetic, intelligent people gather to exchange ideas, share critiques and encouragement, and feed each others’ vitality. Each week features a short talk at the beginning to kick things off, followed by general discussions and networking. This week IP consultant, lawyer, artist, and entrepreneur Hannah Alphey will be giving a talk about IP considerations for start-ups and growing businesses. Can you afford to miss it?
Thursday 17th June: Media140, 6:30pm in Glasgow CCA (350 Sauchiehall Street)
Social media enthusiast or cynic? Whichever camp you find yourself in, it seems that we are all still trying to find ways to use these technologies to grow and develop our organisations. We are questioning how influential and effective social media already is and we are wondering too just how powerful social media may yet become. In Glasgow on 17th June, a team of media professionals from the UK and the US will be examining how social media can be used to influence customer behaviours and create successful strategies for change. Looks like tickets are sold out, but email mark@media140.com to beg and plead or watch online www.media140.com/live.
Friday 18th June: Edinburgh Coffee Morning, 8am at Centotre (George Street)
Lovely bunch of digital media, social media, and just generally fun folks chatting away and making new friends. The best way to start your Friday, and well worth the early arrival (you can trickle in 8-9am if that helps). It’s hard to get out of bed, but whenever I manage I’m always so happy I went!
Friday 18th June: BarCamp Scotland, 4:30pm at Glasgow STV Offices, Pacific Quay
BarCamp 2010, in association with New Media Corp and Interactive Scotland, invites you to hear about the latest digital innovation from STV, Mediacom, Spotify, Facebook (TBC), Realtime Worlds, Scotsman.com, Dog, Line, Whitespace, Innovation Digital, Spider Online, New Media Corp, Wildfire, w00tonomy, ISO Design, University of Abertay and the digital team at the Scottish Government, with music from Radio Magnetic/ InnerEar. Plus, StartupCafe will be hosting a series of rapid fire talks from a variety of awesome folks in the community. What more could you ask for 🙂
A meetup for hackers, designers, startups and people who love tech. Instead of presentations and talks, we work together on side projects or interesting apps, learn new techniques from each other, and hang out in a coffee shop while we do it all. Turn up something Saturday afternoon starting from 12pm, and it’s pretty much BYOL (bring your own laptop). You can have a look at what other folks are working on by going to the group’s site, and share your own project ambitions there as well.
Sunday 20th June: Post-Moonwalk Breasfast, around 10am at Snax (Buccleuch St)
Every once in a while, I think it’s healthy to do something that terrifies you in order to build a more fearless attitude in business. For me, recent inflictions of terror have ranged from ice skating to eating green peppers, and this weekend I’ll be walking a marathon in the Moonwalk supporting a cure for breast cancer. We’ll begin just before midnight on Saturday, and I’m aiming to finish by 9am Sunday (hey, the longest I’ve walked in training so far is 2 miles, so I am in no position to rush through 26). Kate suggested a breakfast to keep me motivated to finish, so feel free to join us at Snax if you’d like to celebrate a bit of fear conquering and Moonwalk craziness.
