Tuesday 10th August: Dorkbot Alba, 8pm at Forest Cafe (3 Bristo Place)
**I’m excited to say Dorkbot Alba is now on our radar, and only sorry I didn’t know about it sooner. If you’re doing anything with electricity, or want to be, do check it out**
Dorkbot is a group of affiliated organizations worldwide that sponsor grassroots meetings of artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors, and anyone else working under the very broad umbrella of “electronic art”. Here in Edinburgh we meet bi-monthly at the Forest Cafe, 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 8pm onwards, upstairs in the Action Room. We hope to mix people with crazy ideas with people who can make them happen. Mostly we chit-chat, but things do happen, sometimes, and if you have an idea, or if you like making things, we’d like to hear from you.
Wednesday 11th August: Edinburgh Tech Meetup, 6:30pm at Appleton Tower 6th Floor
A monthly gathering for anyone in the programming or tech startup scene – developers, programmers, entrepreneurs, students, community members, and curious bystanders. This week’s talks include topics of Yahoo, YQL developer tools, spam and backscatter. Plus there will be free pizza and beer =). No RSVP or tickets needed, it’s a very open and inviting bunch.
*Now every weekday of August!!* Including Friday 13th August: Edinburgh Coffee Morning, 8am at Scottish Cafe on the Mound
Lovely bunch of digital media, social media, and just generally fun folks chatting away and making new friends. The best way to start your Friday, and well worth the early arrival (you can trickle in 8-9am if that helps). It’s hard to get out of bed, but whenever I manage I’m always so happy I went! Note with festival fever pumping extra caffeine in, the beloved Edinburgh Coffee Morning is being held every weekday for the rest of August! So go along as much as you like 🙂
Weekend (and all of August): Free Fringe Festival Events!
Whether it was the Loc8 Solutions’ Fringe 2010 app, the thousands of tourists on the street, or the costumed people invading Appleton Tower, you must have gathered by now that the festivals have begun! But don’t be fooled into spending your latest round of investment or your lunch money in order to enjoy the festivities… There are hundreds and hundreds of shows for a startup-friendly price of free! Personally I love to wander into Counting House and Meadow Bar, and wait for whatever the next show is going to be, but there are dozens of pubs running free comedy shows ALL day long. There are a few organisations running free shows, Laughing Horse Free Festival and PBH’s Free Fringe, for example. The performers will generally ask for a small donation on the way out to help cover their drinks and hostels, so you can contribute as you see fit.
