With a full week of excitement here, I must admit I am struggling to implement my ‘just say no‘ mentality… Thursday alone is enough action for a month!
Panel Discussion on Intellectual Property Rights: Monday 23rd Nov, 5:30pm at UofE Business School, LT1
Come to this panel discussion to hear a range of views about the issues surrounding innovation vs copyright. This event is held jointly between the E-Club and the Bathwick Group, and the list of speakers looks like an entertaining mix. Hear from the Head of School from Informatics, a School of Law professor, a law firm partner, the awesome hand-making startup Touch Bionics, and Scottish Enterprise. Crisps and wine as a reward for listening, and no need to RSVP.
SICSA DemoFest: Tuesday 24th Nov, 5pm at the Informatics Forum
Check out all the hot research and advancements in computer science and informatics coming out of Scottish universities, including our very own Kate! Organised by Informatics Ventures, I think the event will feature 40-50 projects on display so you can wander around and see all sorts of cool research with commercialisation potential. This is the researchy counterpart to Engage Invest Exploit (aka Guy Kawasaki event) if you remember that excitement from April. While tickets are currently all allocated, I think there is a very high chance you’ll get in off the waitlist so do add your name there if you are interested.
Winning Through Innovation: Wednesday 25th, 9am-1:30pm at Edinburgh Corn Exchange
also Tuesday 24th at Glasgow Springfield Quay & Monday 23rd in Dundee
A fun Scottish Enterprise conference with a good set of speakers and usually a quality attendance list as well (250 people!). Free to attend, but do RSVP via the website – use the link for relevant city. Oh and includes lunch as well =).
Building and Growing an Internet Startup: Wednesday 25th Nov, 6:30-9pm at UofE Business School LT1
In this Silicon Valley Speaker Series talk from E-Club, Alexis Ohanian will discuss the founding and growth of his internet startup, Reddit. Reddit was incubated by the infamous Y Combinator, which operates a bootcamp-style startup school. How influential was this to his startup and what role did it play? What can our young aspiring internet entrepreneurs learn to increase their chances of success? No need to RSVP, just show up, and wine and crisps will follow. Note that Alexis has a Masterclass Thursday as well.
Glasgow Tech Meetup: Wednesday 25th Nov, 7pm at Glasgow Caledonian, Saltire Centre
A monthly must for anyone in the tech startup scene – developers, programmers, entrepreneurs, students, community members, and curious bystanders. This week’s talks include geo-location and 4D modeling software! Plus there will be free pizza and beer =). No RSVP or tickets needed, it’s a very open and inviting bunch.
SuperJam Tea Party: Thursday 26th Nov, 11am-2pm at Meadowbank Sports Centre
What do you get when you combine a successful Edinburgh startup + hundreds of elderly people + more scones/jam than you’ve ever imagined…? Yes, a fun and random afternoon that restores a bit of perspective and that will probably make you feel more inspired when you get back to work. Giant tea parties are one way Fraser gives back to the community, and I’ve always had a blast helping out, serving scones, chatting with the guests and dancing with grandpas. Come along to Meadowbank on London Road if you think this sounds entertaining and you’re up for helping.
Alex Ohanian Masterclass on Internet Startups: Thursday 26th Nov, 1-5:30pm at Appleton Tower 8.02
An afternoon with Reddit co-founder Alex Ohanian, this masterclass is sure to be of value to any budding internet startups. Appears all 15 spots have been claimed, but comment below if you are interested and we’ll see if there’s any wiggle room for you. We did give you first notice though (remember ‘unhidden treasures‘ post?) when the event opened up, so hope that helped.
TEDx Edinburgh: Thursday 26th Nov, 3pm at Informatics Forum
The first TEDx event to be held in Edinburgh, the afternoon will feature a selection of videos and speakers following the theme: Local Models of Participation, Inclusion and Sustainability. The event is not aimed at startups, but we do love TED and thought this may interest some of you. StartupCafe will be providing cafe-style catering in the form of baked goods – and yes, since it’s Thanksgiving, that entails some pumpkin pie! Tickets are impressively free, but do RSVP here to claim a spot.
German Market begins, New Town lights go on, and Thanksgiving for my fellow countrymen: Thursday 26th Nov
There are loads of festivities to celebrate, so get out of your office and go get some mulled wine or catch a turkey.
