Note the Edinburgh Science Festival is running 9th-22nd April, so you have a great excuse to get out of the office and explore some events there too!
The industry is awash in an epidemic of bad code. We all know what bad code looks like – it’s opaque and impenetrable. But, we spend little time trying to figure out how it got that way. We assume it’s tight schedules or lack of discipline, but perhaps there’s more. In this talk, Michael Feathers (Chief Scientist at Obtiva Corporation) will relate several things that he’s learned by taking a longitudinal view of a system – by issuing queries of a code base and relating the results back to events on a team. This event is put on by the organisation formerly known as the British Computing Society.
As we mentioned last week here, Social Innovation Camp is holding a “call for ideas” event to get the creative juices flowing before the SiCamp event this June. Join Social Innovation Camp for an evening of thinking about how we can use technology to tackle social problems ~ specifically social isolation this time around. You don’t need to know anything about technology to take part; just an interest in making your world a better place. It’s a chance to find out a bit more about how you can get involved in our forthcoming Social Innovation Camp in Edinburgh, June 2011.
Tuesday 12th April: EdLambda Meetup, 7pm at The Outhouse
EdLambda is the Edinburgh-based Functional Programming Society, which meets on a monthly basis somewhere in Edinburgh to discuss functional programming, chat, and drink! To stay in the loop, find em at @edlambda on Twitter or subscribe to their newsletter here.
Wednesday 13th April: Edinburgh TechMeetup, 6:30pm at Appleton Tower 8th Floor
Monthly gathering of anyone in tech, or interested in the techie scene, from developers to tech startups to SMEs – and groupies! Usually features presentations of various sorts, and mingling time, all fueled by free pizza and beer . This month promises “Lots of talk about people’s projects, and a Q&A session with Google”… Is this because the amazing Jennie Lees is in town??Sounds good to me!
Friday 15th April: Edinburgh Coffee Morning, 8am at Centotre (George Street)
Every Friday morning, Edinburgh’s creative early risers meet at 8am for breakie, and a chance to share ideas and Web 2.0 finds. Join in and brighten up your morning before a productive day.
Join LAUNCH.ed, the Entrepreneurship Club, and Google for a hands-on workshop on project managing like a pro. With the workshop led by EPIS grad Jennie Lees, I’m sure this will be awesome! (haha no pressure Jennie, it just will be). This workshop gives you the chance to learn about the PM world, Google style. You’ll work through two real world challenges in product design and learn how to think from the inside out. Appears to be filled up, but add yourself to the waiting list and then come up with a plan to make everyone else cancel so you can go (I never said that).
Friday 15th April: TechStars Network Conference, New York City
That’s where I’ll be… holler if you just happen to be in the big apple too, or know someone going!
Ok I’ve been a little out of the loop in Hawaii (I know, rough times…) What else is goin’ on?
