Whilst the latest talk around the Edinburgh tech circle has been about the Turing Festival towards the end of the month, I’m actually looking forward to the other festival happening this coming Thursday and Friday that we don’t often hear about: Edinburgh Interactive Festival.
Formerly known as the Edinburgh Games Festival, in recent years, the festival organisers have embraced the emergence of new media interactivity and broadened its appeal and audience.
One look at the programme should tell you that the EIF 2011 is a mouth-watering prospect to anyone working or wanting to work in either games, mobile or learning. There is a public track – which is free to attend, on a first-come-first-served basis and kicks off with an introduction to the games industry and storytelling. Friday afternoon is particularly exciting with a preview of the upcoming Zelda game.
There is also an industry track, which is for those that are currently in … unsurprisingly … the games industry. Gamification is on the agenda, as well as game-based learning. Also, particularly relevant I think for the current state of the economy, is a whole day on funding on Friday. For anyone interested in getting interactivity and getting transmedia/cross-platform projects commissioned, this looks like a worthwhile day out of the office. Tickets are £175 +VAT. Less if you’re from Scotland.
We’ll be there covering the event – so if you’re around, please come and say hello!
