Our newest guest blogger, Priyanka Bose, offers stories and insights from the perspective of an Edinburgh student currently setting up a business. She’s got an exciting path ahead and we’re delighted to have her onboard.

How do you turn an idea into a reality? How do entrepreneurs even come up with ideas?  How are companies born? Well, this is how I did it.

I was unemployed, the first summer after my freshman year of university, and I couldn’t get a job, anywhere. That’s how it came to me, sitting at my computer one hot, dry day in July, responding to messages on Facebook. It was one message in particular, from a friend in California that really struck out to me. She wanted to know about the application process to universities in the U.K., and I remember thinking, “if only I could turn this into a job?” Well, why not? And that’s when (more…)

Nicola met Prince Philip!

I’d heard rumours that he would be at the 40th Anniversary celebration for Edinburgh Research & Innovation, which took place in the Playfair Library yesterday, but I am totally shocked that it was true.

Luckily Nicola and Hasan of VidioWiki were armed with their handy Flip camera, and we got to have a look at one of the stills.

Anyone else have stories about Prince Philip from yesterday?

A beautiful idea, kept alive in the donation centre while awaiting a new owner.Wouldn’t it be cool if umbrellas had lasers shooting out the top? Wouldn’t it be rad if picture frames had custom messages scrolling around them? Or if you could get tweets read aloud to you by a Twitter app that sounded like Cheryl Cole? Well ok, so maybe we disagree here, but wouldn’t it be great if we could share all the random business ideas that pop into our heads?

There are loads of people in search of an inspiring idea to pursue. And there are loads of ideas that get thought up and left to wither in the cold – with no blankets, no food or water, no love… but if brought to the donation centre, they just might find the right owners to care for them and help them grow into real businesses. Whether you have too much on your plate already or (more…)

Building companies and attracting talent - show me the money! The Venture Capital and Public Policy series continues, brought to you by Michael Clouser. Otherwise, jump right in and look out for Part 3 tomorrow.

WHY AREN’T THERE MORE START-UPS AND TECHNOLOGY COMPANIES OF SIZE IN SCOTLAND

There are not as many start-ups and technology companies of size in Scotland because of the lack of risk capital at all stages of the lifecycle of a high growth venture. Especially in early and mid-stage venture capital. Arguably, currently there are only two substantial players in the technology venture capital game here in the early stages, and another one that is playing in the later stage and is pan-European. The angels in the Country have all but shut down, especially in (more…)

Hi Jeff, can you fill my shopping cart like that please?Whilst the Financial Times is busy publishing articles explaining how worse the British economy is getting, there’s a guy across the pond who made $2 billion last week. Is it true? Is it legitimate? The answer to these questions is yes. That guy is Jeffrey Bezos. He founded in 1994 a startup known as Amazon. Yes, that’s the Amazon you’re thinking of. (more…)

Red Button Design wowing the judgesThe search is on for the most ‘exciting and innovative’ startups in the UK, and low and behold two of our friends were selected to represent the nation. Amanda Jones of Red Button Design and Richard Burton of Hoodeasy do us proud, and we need to rally behind them if we want to see a young entrepreneur from around here make the finals. It was Craig Smith who got voted through to the next round on Scotland’s behalf, so congrats to him, but the wildcard spot is up for grabs! Let’s show the rest of the UK what we’re made of and rally behind Amanda and Richard. You can see their pitch videos HERE and rate them by clicking on the stars below.

Red Button Design is an internationally award winning (and Dragon’s Den appearing!) design house founded by Amanda and her partner-in-crime James Brown, developing products exclusively for the aid and humanitarian markets. Their first product is an innovative water transport, purification and storage device designed to bring relief to the 1.2 billion people across the world without access to safe water.

Richard runs a company that sells custom hoodies to students in the UK and USA. Hoodeasy is a revolutionary way for groups to order (more…)

Once in a while, something just makes you go “WOW”. This morning, fellow StartupCafe blogger Mark sent me the link http://www.equityforpunks.com/. Not being quite sure what I would find, I found this video:

Now, I don’t even drink beer and I want to invest. Mark’s analysis of the situation is that Brewdog are taking unique way to connect with their customers while raising finance at the same time: (more…)

rssI’m always amazed to see the number of people who still do not use a feed aggregator (also knows under other names). Those are usually people who have not tried one, or do not know what they are. Maybe we should call that the “Twitter Effect”, that being when there is a service available which has been proven successful (and sometimes useful), but still a majority of the population does not understand it. Or maybe it is what Geoffrey Moore already described as the Chasm.

Aggregators have been around for quite some time now, and we were even lucky to have one of the early adopters talk at the Edinburgh University Business School E-Club a few months ago: Mark Fletcher who founded Bloglines. I personally recommend Google Reader, not because it is Google, but because it simply does the job. All you need is to sign up using your Google account, and then start importing your RSS feed. Launch.ed logoStarting this month, Brian Baillie, Launch.Ed’s new business advisor, will be holding drop-in business advice clinics in George Square! The clinics will take place on the last Wednesday of every month from 13:00 to 16:00. Students or recent graduates of the University of Edinburgh can pre-book a 45 minute meeting with Brian by emailing brian.baillie@ed.ac.uk.

This is the perfect opportunity for George Square groupies to get feedback on their Business Idea Competition application, to learn more about business support and funding at Edinburgh, or to chat about a business idea they’ve had with an experienced entrepreneur and advisor.

This month, the clinic is on Wed., 28 October. There are only a few sessions available, and they will go quickly, so anyone interested should book far in advance.
