Today, I headed up to Stirling Management Centre to attend the “Be Inspired to Innovate” event held by EDTC. Briefly, it was a series of 6 workshops, all by entrepreneurs about how they took their product from idea, to prototype, and then to market.

One of the really interesting points was made by Kelly Forsyth-Gibson, inventor of ThudGuard (a safety hat for toddlers learning to walk – its looks like a scrum cap for kids). Continue Reading »

Jessica is in Barcelona this week for the Mobile World Congress. So, I’m standing in to give you your weekly dose of events in Edinburgh.

Wed 17th Feb, 9am, Stirling, Be Inspired to Innovate for your future

For the 3rd year, EDTC and ICASS bring to you their FREE one day event and showcase aimed at companies and entrepreneurs who are developing new products and processes.   This year the event will focus on the clients we have helped and their stories of success – no celebrities, no advisors, no death by PowerPoint – just our clients sharing their experiences with you!   Through six different interactive workshops, hear first hand from our clients how they met the challenges and overcame the obstacles of developing a new product.  Learn from these clients and ask them anything you want to know about getting your product to market.   We have a diverse range of clients showcasing products from various industry sectors, each with their own story to tell.

Social enterprise startup – Flock Local – is through to the National Finals in the John Logie Baird awards! They’re up for the Social Enterprise Innovator category and this is more surprising considering it was only two weeks ago that we blogged about FlockLocal launching into beta!

Best of luck to James and the rest of the Flock Local team. The award winners will be announced on 12th March.

A few months ago, I mentioned that the Guardian was hiring local beatbloggers. In particular, I was intrigued by why the Guardian picked Edinburgh, Cardiff and Leeds – it struck me that these cities didn’t have a whole lot in common.

Fast forward to a few months, and you will be interested to hear that the new blogger has started!

The Edge of Success

By Ryan Connolly.

It is a wondrous thing living on the edge of success. With all your skills, knowledge and experience that final hurdle it just out of reach, not for a lack of trying. Ambition can be a dangerous thing.

Oscar Wilde once said the only way to truly find and test reality is to put it on a tight rope. This is the life of an entrepreneur. The risk and the euphoria hand in hand at every stage.

This young entrepreneur has been on this ‘edge’ for a number of years now, having successfully started 5 different businesses while developing countless others within Continue Reading »

Tuesday, 9th February: The Power of an Advisory Board, 6:30-8pm at Lecture Theatre 1, UofE Business School, 7 Bristo Sq

Bill Joos, Principal of “Go To Market Consulting” and known by many as the Pitch Doctor, is back for his annual visit to E-Club. This time he’s here to tell us why the Board of Advisors is an entrepreneur’s most underutilized tool! In addition to talking about how to form, select and leverage your Advisory Board, Bill will contrast the differences between that and the corporate Board of Directors. No need to RSVP, just turn up and catch wine and crisps at 8pm afterward. This week sees the adoption of Bloop to help with mingling, so that will be exciting too.
