Mobile life - gotta love itI could hardly sleep at night knowing there was a meetup I’d never been to, and I’m happy to report that my visit to Mobile Monday (MoMo) on 3rd Aug was a delightful and enlightening experience. For those of you still out of the loop, MoMo Edinburgh is a new group for anyone interested in the mobile scene, and folks meet monthly for lunch in Centotre to discuss the latest happenings. Turns out they’re a lot of fun!

It was a very friendly and welcoming bunch, and the cozy size (6 of us on this occasion, as holiday appeared to be a priority for others) made it easy to have group discussions. I was brought up to speed on Blyk, the mobile phone company that offered free minutes/texts to the youth market (more…)

Winners announced for the Informatics Touch Competition
The winners of the Informatics Touch competition was announced last Thursday (30th July 2009), with yours truly having a stake in the competition …
Staff track:
1st Prize: Neelima Alluri (Personal Banking application)
Student track:
1st Prize: Kate Ho (Interactive Mortgage Guide)
The judging panel was comprised of the Research and Innovation team at RBS, alongside Dave Robertson (the new Head of Informatics).
Provisionally (pending on confirmation from HQ), Neelima and I will present at the next Techmeetup about developing for the Microsoft Surface, and the applications will be able for demo too.

Last week, Spotify announced their App for Apple’s iPhone. Unfortunately Apple is known for controlling tightly the Apps available to iPhone users. As Spotify is a service changing the way people consume music, it could potentially harm the already in difficulty music majors, and compete with Apple’s hugely successful music store: iTunes. The Spotify people, knowing this, have made sure to make the release of their App a matter of public interest involving as many press agencies as possible. The spotlight is now awaiting Apple’s reaction. (more…)

KeepmeoutLast week, I caught up with Ali Eslami, a recent Informatics graduate who created Keepmeout.com – a website that prevents you from checking facebook, your gmail, and any other website too often.

This is the pitch: You tell keepmeout which website you are addicted to, and what interval you should only allow yourself to check it and it provides a little link which you could use to bookmark. If you’re like me, and use the bookmark bar extensively, this tool becomes invaluable. (more…)

Square-GoThis week, the University of Edinburgh Entrepreneurship Club announced the winners of its incubator space competition writes Guest Blogger Hilary Singer. First place: Edinburgh entrepreneur Josh Wilson and his start-up gaming magazine SquareGo. The competition, sponsored by the Abbey Santander Group, offered local entrepreneurs the chance to win up to £2500 worth of office space. (more…)

With outlets like fmylife, failblog or #epicfail to broadcast your lowest moments, the online world is embracing failure and extrapolating the entertainment value from misery, embarrassment, and devastation. Microsoft taking a swipeAt the end of May, Microsoft unveiled its search engine, Bing. Then last week Google announced that it would launch an operating system for laptops in the second half of 2010 with the first version to be targeted at netbooks. Microsoft have since retaliated with their recent announcement – the launch of a free, web-based version of MS Office 2010 which will include lighter versions of Word, Powerpoint and Excel. A few weeks ago, after the “Marketing With No Money” seminar given by Doug Richard at the School for Startups hosted by the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics, I thought I’d give affiliate marketing a try. The idea was to put a blog, with a little content, market the blog on Twitter, and make revenues using the Amazon Affiliates scheme. Easy!? (more…)
