Wow. What a party. What a turnout. When the Edinburgh (and Glasgow!) startup community comes out to play, we really do play! (We managed to drink through the £500 bar tab in an hour and 15 mins – bet there are a few sore heads this morning.)

And don’t take it from me, here’s what other people said about the night:

StartupCafe is a fun and happy place to go to find out about other startups in the scene so that when you encounter folk at coffee mornings, tech meetups, networking evenings, presentations or even the local pub, you might recognise your fellow entrepreneurs (aspiring or otherwise) and feel a connection!

Yes we like to offer news and opinion and generally have a chat on the site but we like to give startups a place to shout their successes, share their lessons, discover what their peers are up to and feel like they belong to a welcoming, funny, supportive, quirky little community.

Are you an Edin based startup?  Let folk know who you are!  Let them know what you do!  Let them recognise you and support you with cheery words of wisdom or a free beer 🙂 (more…)

We love the HubDub team and sounds like one very lucky person will get to join them! Know an end-to-end LAMP developer, or is that you? Details below, and apply here if you’re interested: http://bit.ly/fanduel-webdev. Good luck!

Company overview
Hubdub Ltd is a VC funded high-growth startup based in Edinburgh and San Francisco that aims to be the world’s largest premium social gaming company for sports fans. Its main product, FanDuel, transforms traditional fantasy sports ($1bn, 30m people market) into an instant gratification daily game where users win cash prizes every day. It is played on FanDuel.com, via white label partners such as the New York Post, and in future on mobile. If you want to work with smart people on an exciting product that could be Scotland’s next big success story we want to hear from you.

Description
Hubdub is looking for an end-to-end LAMP developer to work on the core FanDuel product. You will have a high degree of responsibility in a small development team, and work with the product manager and technical lead to scope, implement, test and maintain new functionality in the game. The environment is fast paced, challenging and dynamic. We are looking for someone comfortable with this level of uncertainty and who thrives on the excitement of working in a startup. You will form part of a highly talented team so only high-calibre applicants able to demonstrate excellent problem solving and software engineering skills will be successful. (more…)

FanDuel wins a Europa!

Not quite sure how we managed to miss this a week ago, but our very local FanDuel won a Europa (the European Startup Awards) for the Best Entertainment, Sport or Leisure Startup Category. The judge’s comment was:

Having though deeply about fantasy games, the old HubDub team pivoted into sports and came up with Fanduel. They now have a smash hit on their hands. At the same time they are proving that you can run a startup that looks like it’s from the US, when in fact it’s from Europe.

FanDuel beat off PickLive.com and ERepublik. Well done to the Fanduel team!

The spotlight was on Edinburgh this week for a US radio show covering entrepreneurs. The BusinessMakers Show recently paid us a visit to investigate the entrepreneurial activity in our lovely capital and speak with a handful of local startups. [listen to interview online here]

Russ Capper – one of the hosts of The BusinessMakers Show – flew over from sunny Houston, Texas, where the show is based. Previous guests on the show have included Steve Wozniak of Apple, Malcolm Gladwell (author of The Tipping Point), and Carly Fiorina (former CEO of Hewlett-Packard)… so I’ll just let you conclude what great success lies in our futures.

I filled Russ in on why Edinburgh is so awesome, life at the exciting startup TenBu Technologies, and of course StartupCafe. You may notice I was caught off guard when he asked ‘So what do you do in your spare time?’. (more…)
