This year, I was lucky enough to be chosen as one of the participants on the TRC Cross Creative programme ran by TRC Media.

Yes, at first, I hadn’t heard of TRC Media either. After looking up their website, it turns out they’re a charity that provides training to the media sector – TV, publishing, games and digital/web creatives.

Their Cross Creative programme is a 9 month ‘course’ which takes together a number of people that are creative decision makers in their organisation and exposes them to high-level speakers to help them grow their business and find interesting new partners to work with.

The class of 2011-2012 are: Continue Reading »

Turing Festival logoThis August marks the inaugurual Turing Edinburgh International Technology Festival. Intended to be “an emerging technology event, bringing together the cream of the world’s technology-based innovators and entrepreneurs with Scottish web, broadcast and mobile talent,” the new festival is a sort of experiment, with big plans for the future if all goes well.

Confirmed speakers include reps from Facebook, Seedcamp and Union Square Ventures (behind Twitter, Foursquare, and Zyng). Word on the street is that a Google+ developer is also on the speakers list, Continue Reading »

Next Wed and Thurs (29th and 30th June) is the place to be if you’re in the creative industries and need some IP help.

Although registration fees are a little steep at £199, there are some quality speakers. You can check out the conference at: http://digitalspark.abertay.ac.uk/

In the knowledge economy, intangible assets can account for 70% of a company’s value.

This conference will explore practical mechanisms of exploiting those assets by using the intellectual property system efficiently and effectively – laying the ground work for future profit generation.

This conference will bring together industrialists, lawyers, financiers, funding agencies, intermediaries and policy makers to discuss practical steps SMEs can take to significantly enhance their competitiveness; the most important recent developments in IP law for your business; and success stories of IP management in the digital creative industries.

With an introductory workshops on the basics of IP, interactive master classes with leading business and legal experts, presentations from senior representatives of Google and Universal Music (UK), and expert panel discussions with senior representatives of Sony, Google, Aardman Rights, NCR and SEGA, this conference will help you plan for the future success of your business.

It’s rare that I find myself in a situation where I read something at work, and feel the need to reply right away.

Posts like the original rallying call and the reply to it, is simply rehashing the same arguments over and over again; more importantly, it’s doing something that I hate – playing the blame game.

On one hand, some say that we need better and more support and coherency for entrepreneurship in the Universities (especially in Glasgow, rather than Edinburgh which is where I think Chris and Michael were referring to). On the other, some say that you should get on with it. So, who is it? Who is to blame? Is it the universities that aren’t pulling their weight, or is it that entrepreneurs are lazy and want everything handed to them on a plate?

These arguments are a complete over-simplification of the problem.

Scottish FlagOur colleagues at Startup Digest and Social Penguin recently posted a call to action for the Scottish startup community, in which they identified the failure of universities to promote entrepreneurship, a disjointed startup community, and the predominance of risk-averse investors as obstacles that must be overcome before entrepreneurship can flourish in Scotland.

I appreciate the sentiment of this post and kudos to them for speaking out about something that’s obviously important to a lot of us. But while Scotland could certainly improve in these areas, I’m tired of pessimistic talk about Scotland’s weaknesses, and fear that we hold ourselves back from greater success with a self-perpetuating myth of inferiority. Scotland is already a vibrant entrepreneurial hub, enabled by our universities, our strong communities, and investment networks. Here’s why. Continue Reading »

The other day we received a message on our Facebook page:

“Hey, I’ve just graduated from Glasgow university and want to get into the startup scene. Getting involved with a current startup seems to be what is mostly advised on the web as a good way to start, but I’ve been researching on the internet and can’t find anywhere where there is any info on startups that are hiring in Scotland or the UK for that matter, perhaps there aren’t any hiring outside people? Any advice on where to look or any other advice would be appreciated…”

This would be the perfect opportunity to introduce a new company called…wait for it…WorkInStartups, which helps people find exciting jobs in awesome startups.

Founder Diana Proca (formerly of Launch48) has been extremely busy over the last couple of months looking for jobs within UK startups to advertise on her site, and she’s found loads!  There are lots of exciting roles for designers, developers, marketers, sales folk, managers as well as a variety of intern positions for people wanting to gain experience. I met Dave Black when I started as a Studio Manager at Leith-based, creative design and marketing agency Digital Face where he was the Creative Director, and a generally entertaining guy.

Most days he would bring his Dalmatian, Poppy, into the studio and she would potter about the place endearingly, occasionally letting out a huge sigh before curling up to sleep under Dave’s desk. Dave has since moved on from Digital Face and is now the owner of Black Arts, a specialist digital design and production studio.

He has very kindly agreed to write articles for StartupCafe on design, branding and social media so I thought it quite right and proper to give him a 60 second grilling!  Previous appearances on StartupCafe include: Should your brand be talking through social media? Which one?  and Three common mistakes in self-description.

You can see examples of Dave’s work here and here you can follow him on Twitter: @DaveBl4ck

So, let’s find out a wee bit more about him…

What does Black Arts Studio do? We’re a creative agency who build web sites, branding, design and video at our offices in Edinburgh for clients all over the world

Your company culture in 3 words? Original, intelligent design. Continue Reading »

Scottish entrepreneur Fraser Doherty, of Superjam, has launched an iPhone app that is ‘jam-packed’ (his words) with recipes for all sorts of jammy treats. The app contains videos, stories and photographs of the recipes.

Doherty (aka Jam Man to his friends) has been extremely busy of late; in April this year he launched his second book SuperBusiness, a guide to “starting your own business, having fun and doing good along the way”.

This guy started out as a teenager making jam in his kitchen, using his grandmother’s secret recipe, and knocking on his neighbours’ doors to sell them. Since then he’s gone on to supply major UK Continue Reading »
