Java User Group Scotland (brilliantly abbreviated JUGS) has moved its meetings to Appleton Tower to accommodate more folks, so you can check them out tonight 7pm, room 6.01 if you’re interested – I am trying so hard not to make a horrible pun about checking out JUGS in Appleton (oh man, I slipped).

Tonight Andrew Williams will be talking about writing webapps in a non-scary way, and you’ll find more details from him below 🙂 JUGS meetings take place monthly on the last Wednesday of the month, so if my math is correct, mark your calendars for 26th May as well!

Last week, the credit crunch claims its latest victim – Adventi. The IT consultancy firm, which also owns the Scotsys brand, suffered cash flow problems recently and the administrators have been called. 4ip is looking for new ideas around an unusual theme: Positive Body Image. Ideas are wanted to focus on promoting health and wellness for mainstream, young, female audiences.

Of course, this isn’t an easy issue to deal with. As 4ip’s call alludes, the widespread exposure of “beautiful” women to young girls is one of the core causes of this body image problem, and this is something that no app can fix alone. 4ip are looking for something which will help shake up that world. If you think you might have an interesting idea, waste no time in contacting them! Continue Reading »

In a follow up to yesterday’s post on tips and tricks to EIE ’10, here’s some light-hearted humour to the event. Duncan and Angus talks about exhibiting at EIE 10:

This week, we’re very lucky to have Alex Ogilvie – a well-known figure around the University – as a guest blogger. Having been on “best exhibition stand” judging panels, we thought Alex would be perfectly placed to offer up tips to anyone exhibiting at the upcoming EIE 10 event on 12th May. You can check out Alex’s business at Webwise Business, and the Objective Associates blog that he runs.

1995 was the first time we ever exhibited at a conference/trade show. A bit of a disaster really – completely unprepared – we must have looked like the Beverly Hillbillies. Strangely though we won a huge order on the back of the show – which just goes to show, that sometimes it’s all about turning up rather than having the best football boots.

Trade shows don’t guarantee new or indeed any business, but if you’re a virgin exhibitionist how do you get the most out of a trade show? Shows come in all shapes and sizes so do a bit of research first – nonetheless here are some things that we have done over the years to try and get a return:

A quick update …

Things have been slightly quieter than usual at Startupcafe recently, so we thought we would give you a bit of an update, so you don’t think we’ve neglected you!

First off, a few of you were caught out by our “real-life cafe” story on the 1st April. Although we deliberately tried to put in a few big clues, we managed to sound convincing enough for a number of our readers to believe it was real. While I attribute part of it to Jessica’s ability to compose prose; a large dose of it was also down to the desperate need for startups for good facilities. Several people have mentioned that this should be an area that Scottish Enterprise should address – but alas, with the expected public funding cuts, I fear that belts will be tightened.
