Elevator Networking Event: Monday 26th Oct, 6pm at Why Not Nightclub (George St)

A free business networking club for folks 18-30 years old, these events are pitched at young entrepreneurs and people who want to set up their own businesses. Red Button Design wowing the judgesThe search is on for the most ‘exciting and innovative’ startups in the UK, and low and behold two of our friends were selected to represent the nation. Amanda Jones of Red Button Design and Richard Burton of Hoodeasy do us proud, and we need to rally behind them if we want to see a young entrepreneur from around here make the finals. It was Craig Smith who got voted through to the next round on Scotland’s behalf, so congrats to him, but the wildcard spot is up for grabs! Let’s show the rest of the UK what we’re made of and rally behind Amanda and Richard. You can see their pitch videos HERE and rate them by clicking on the stars below.

Red Button Design is an internationally award winning (and Dragon’s Den appearing!) design house founded by Amanda and her partner-in-crime James Brown, developing products exclusively for the aid and humanitarian markets. Their first product is an innovative water transport, purification and storage device designed to bring relief to the 1.2 billion people across the world without access to safe water.

Richard runs a company that sells custom hoodies to students in the UK and USA. Hoodeasy is a revolutionary way for groups to order Continue Reading »

22e1788This week’s spotlight is on a wonderful woman with one of the cutest business websites. Christine Gupta is a tech marketing guru, CloudCamp organiser, and excellent person to have in a meeting. She recently cracked me up advising, ‘What you need is a completer/finisher… but I’m expensive.’ Needless to say, we love her.

What’s your Business? The Gupta Partnership – marketing & PR specialists for sustainable & disruptive technologies

Give us your company culture in 3 words: Get in early

What’s the next big challenge or hurdle that the company has to overcome?
How to cope with all the new business that’s coming our way and still work as a two-person business from a home office

In one sentence, what’s the personal dream?

Just to be happy in what I do and with the people who matter to me.

What do you do for stress relief? Continue Reading »

Once in a while, something just makes you go “WOW”. This morning, fellow StartupCafe blogger Mark sent me the link http://www.equityforpunks.com/. Not being quite sure what I would find, I found this video:

Now, I don’t even drink beer and I want to invest. Mark’s analysis of the situation is that Brewdog are taking unique way to connect with their customers while raising finance at the same time: Continue Reading »

I'd work for them!

A cool marketing/promotions startup based locally is recruiting Edinburgh students to help design marketing campaigns for universities. Know anyone who wants to gain experience (and make some money) in this field? Get them trained up now, and you can hire them as VP Marketing for your startup next year. This would have been my dream job once upon a time…

Worth checking out the Wright Wallace Associates website by the way just for their amusing Story (excerpt: ‘Will Wright and Dug Wallace met, and hated each other’). Love these guys already. Ok back to the point, job offer below!

Campus Brand Manager Position

rssI’m always amazed to see the number of people who still do not use a feed aggregator (also knows under other names). Those are usually people who have not tried one, or do not know what they are. Maybe we should call that the “Twitter Effect”, that being when there is a service available which has been proven successful (and sometimes useful), but still a majority of the population does not understand it. Or maybe it is what Geoffrey Moore already described as the Chasm.

Aggregators have been around for quite some time now, and we were even lucky to have one of the early adopters talk at the Edinburgh University Business School E-Club a few months ago: Mark Fletcher who founded Bloglines. I personally recommend Google Reader, not because it is Google, but because it simply does the job. All you need is to sign up using your Google account, and then start importing your RSS feed. Launch.ed logoStarting this month, Brian Baillie, Launch.Ed’s new business advisor, will be holding drop-in business advice clinics in George Square! The clinics will take place on the last Wednesday of every month from 13:00 to 16:00. Students or recent graduates of the University of Edinburgh can pre-book a 45 minute meeting with Brian by emailing brian.baillie@ed.ac.uk.

This is the perfect opportunity for George Square groupies to get feedback on their Business Idea Competition application, to learn more about business support and funding at Edinburgh, or to chat about a business idea they’ve had with an experienced entrepreneur and advisor.

This month, the clinic is on Wed., 28 October. There are only a few sessions available, and they will go quickly, so anyone interested should book far in advance.

I just tweet what? Now, let me pre-qualify this entire post first by saying that I think Scottish Institute of Enterprise (SIE) is a great institution, and I think they run some of the best events there are for student entrepreneurs. They do a great job. Plus, SIE intern Hilary Singer is one of our favourite bloggers.

But I have to say, when I heard about their new twitter competition, I was somewhat amused/perplexed/confused.

Why?

Well, you can win £150, and all you have to do is retweet:

Can Scotland be the most amazing place for startup companies? This hot-off-the-press story is brought to you by Michael Clouser, Ph.D. Candidate in Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy, School of Business at the University of Edinburgh. Thanks Mike!

Are you interested in what Governments and Universities might do to both create and help more Start-ups?

A new society is forming at the University of Edinburgh. PhD students Antonio Malfense Fierro and Michael Clouser have launched the society named the “Entrepreneurship, Venture Capital, and Research Policy Society of the University of Edinburgh” (for now at least).  The society is for students, researchers, and policy makers who want to learn more about entrepreneurship, knowledge creation and venture (entrepreneurial risk capital in the broader sense) capital supply dynamics. This society was created out of the perceived increased interest amongst students and researchers. While Michael and Antonio are PhD students in the Entrepreneurship and Innovation Group in the Business School at the University of Edinburgh, the society will be open to the whole range of students at the University.

This society will focus on Continue Reading »
