Your events guide for this week:
Tuesday, 15th Feb: Edinburgh Night Owls, 7.30pm- late, Favorit
Got a side project that you’re working on? Or don’t fancy working 9-5pm? Come and join us at Edinburgh Night Owls on Tuesday night, 7.30pm-late. At Favorit (just opposite McEwan Hall). [edited: was an earlier time of 9pm] The idea is that its just somewhere that people (developers, designers, writers) hang out and work together. So if you have somewhere to do some work, or want to get some feedback or just want to hang out with people who love working late nights, then come and hang out. http://edinnightowls.eventbrite.com/
Wednesday, 16th Feb: Tech Law for Startups, 5.30pm for 6pm start, MBM Commerical
‘Tech Law for Startups’ is a monthly meetup for individuals planning, developing and growing high-growth businesses, primarily based around new technologies. By providing an open forum for individuals to come along to share knowledge and experiences, we are building a network of people who can learn and support each other in dealing with business issues.
Follow us on twitter (@techlaw4startup) and feel free to suggest any particular topics that you would like covered at an upcoming meetup.

The idea is that its just somewhere that people (developers, designers, writers) hang out and work together. If you’re on the Techmeetup list, then its exactly like the same idea as Royal Society of Hackers, Designers and Watchmakers … but on a tuesday night … with more Owl jokes.
So if you have somewhere to do some work, or want to get some feedback or just want to hang out with people who love working late nights, then come and hang out.

Apologies up front. This is probably a bit of a rant but I hope there’s a serious point to be gotten at here.
Last night, I was at Techmeetup presenting the rough plan for the startupcafe mobile app.
I have to say, I got a bit of a curious reaction.
Let me give a bit of context first … Startupcafe started about a year and a half ago because a few of us were frustrated that we were going to startup events, but there was no central place to find out about them. We thought it would be a good idea to post news and events for other people to hear about, as well as pointing out local successes to help make startup life a little bit less lonely. Eventually, we’ve even gone on to do interviews and write up proper articles – something none of us have trained for.
Like quite a few other meetups in the city, it is really ran by a group of people that are doing it in their spare time. It’s a labour of love. Despite the hours, we love helping people and the reactions that we get when someone has found something of value through us. It’s a side project.

The UK Trade & Investment team from San Francisco visited Edinburgh this week, and we were delighted to connect them with the local startup scene. Huge thanks to Cody, Tim, Tanner, and Tahera for being awesome and recognising the wealth of activity up here – and more importantly, being willing to help! Thanks also to those of you that made it along for lunch on Wednesday, and I hope the conversations keep rolling along…
I’ve found UK Trade & Investment (UKTI) folks fantastic for supporting trade show appearances and offering concrete introductions to American companies. Cody was really helpful while I was working with TenBu Technologies, for example getting Sprint to pay attention to us when I had no contact, so I wanted to make sure other startups were made aware of the support available.
I hope it was helpful, and THANK YOU to everyone who came along! Continue Reading »

There’s so much to say, and so little time, so here’s an uber-condensed version of the latest Edinburgh startup news.
Someone new to talk to.
A warm welcome to Alistair Hann, who moved to Edinburgh in January after his two-year-old startup, Zoombu, was acquired by Skyscanner. Watch for Alistair at TechMeetup, Lean Startup Circle, and other events around town. (We met him at Edinburgh Night Owls, so he already has a good handle on the local social scene. Where could he have learned all that so quickly?!)

Wow, I’ve been really interested to read the responses to our predictions for 2011 series. Rather than just hiding them in the comments, I thought I would gather together all the comments and my replies in one place. So here goes …
[Ed: I actually wrote this a while ago but its taken a few weeks to publish it. Sorry!]
Prediction 1: Home entertainment embraces the second screen
1 sentence summary: TV will have to share their attention with the iPad and tablet
Real time expert Phil Leggetter (Kwwika) writes:
Kate – great article and you are 100% correct about the 2nd screen being a massive part of home entertainment now and in the future.
In October 2010 there was an event called 2Screen (http://2-screen.com/) focusing on exactly this and even earlier than that a company called TellyLinks.com (http://tellylinks.com/) partnered with Five TV to provide information synchronised with what was happening on the show Numb3rs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numb3rs).
