opensourceGreg Soper, the managing director of SalesAgility is organising the Scottish Open Source Awards. The event has three aims: stimulate, promote and reward. Greg started his company four years ago, and found that most business owners were not aware of what the open source offer is. Open source software is indeed used by large companies successfully all around the world, but smaller businesses tend to trust brands over collaborative open solutions.

The awards night is about educating people on what open source software has to offer, and put it at the level of the proprietary software offerings. The organisers aspire to get the new generation to embrace the open source movement. Mobile life - gotta love itI could hardly sleep at night knowing there was a meetup I’d never been to, and I’m happy to report that my visit to Mobile Monday (MoMo) on 3rd Aug was a delightful and enlightening experience. For those of you still out of the loop, MoMo Edinburgh is a new group for anyone interested in the mobile scene, and folks meet monthly for lunch in Centotre to discuss the latest happenings. Turns out they’re a lot of fun!

It was a very friendly and welcoming bunch, and the cozy size (6 of us on this occasion, as holiday appeared to be a priority for others) made it easy to have group discussions. I was brought up to speed on Blyk, the mobile phone company that offered free minutes/texts to the youth market (more…)

They’re currently running a Summer Camp for full time students working on pre-launch companies. They’re doing this because they know that students can’t afford to go to big conferences or workshops: (more…)

Open Coffee ClubLast week, I managed to rival Jessica’s addiction to networking events (see entrepreneurship event addicts anonymous if you don’t know what I’m talking about). So I thought I’d write a roundup for each one, starting with OpenCoffee London.

OpenCoffee London – the original home of Open Coffee which is now worldwide. The venue was the Roberts Building at UCL (get off at Euston Tube station, walk down Gower St and turn left). (more…)

As some of you will rememeber, the very successful Engage | Invest | Exploit event was held on 29th April this year, with the keynote speaker being Guy Kawasaki. There’s a voxpop of the day available (see above), and the full video of Guy’s keynote talk available here.

sicamplogoSo, it’s the end of Day 1 at the first Scottish Social Innovation Camp. The idea is to take 6 back-of-the-envelope ideas, add lots of people, then try and make it happen over 48 hours. The point is to take ideas that could potentially create social change by connecting people through the web.

Fantastic time at EnterprisersKate and I recently had the joy of taking part in Enterprisers, a week-long programme run by the Cambridge-MIT Institute that gives science-y PhD students a chance to come out of their shells.

I was the only facilitator out of 16 that had never actually been through Enterprisers before, so I had no idea what I was getting myself into when I committed…   (more…)
