Ollie Saunders

Ollie Saunders is a 24-year-old web software developer who recently moved to Edinburgh following stints in London and Toronto. We met Ollie at the inaugural Lean Startup Circle meeting. He had only been in Scotland for a matter of days, but already had a packed schedule of events to attend.

We know Edinburgh has a lot going on, but when you live here, it’s hard to get the big picture. How does the startup scene in Edinburgh compare to London or Toronto? We offered Ollie a public introduction to the city in exchange for his fresh take on Edinburgh. (more…)

Did you know that Edinburgh is hosting Stanford’s annual Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REE) this year? It’s time to show our friends across the pond and across Europe that Edinburgh is one hip happening place for startups. Well, and it’s a chance for you to showcase your startup/spinout/design project to an audience of rather well-connected people around the world!

The exhibition event (REE Fest) is Wednesday 8th September, starting 5:30pm in the Informatics Forum. Exhibiting is free, but this is the last week to sign up so grab a spot before you write your next email! Tuesday 27th July: Social Boom Birthday Party, 6:30pm at Roxy Art House

Social Booms are fun, free and informal networking events for local individuals involved in the creative industries. If you live or work in Edinburgh and are keen to collaborate, network, learn new things, be inspired or find out what’s happening in your creative field, then Social Boom is for you! Our first Edinburgh Social Boom (#EdSocBoom) in May was really successful, so we’ve decided to host another one! This time we will have some very special sponsors and lots of birthday fun, including a cake-fuelled opportunity to raise money for Breast Cancer Care

When Stuart Roebuck (ProInnovate) was checking out his web app on his iPad through 3G, he noticed something very strange … it didn’t display properly when previously, it had been fine. He switched between 3G and wifi, and for some reason, he noticed that his web app displayed differently depending on the connection.

Girl Geek Scotland: Apply Now for New Workshop Series!

Without getting into intense gender debates, there are some great workshops for women who are running or looking to start up awesome companies. Girl Geek Scotland has identified three areas that women tend to find a bit more challenging, and residential workshops are on offer to help accelerate skills in the areas of negotiation, funding, and creatvity. Spots are fully subsidised by Informatics Ventures, so don’t worry about the cost. Float are off to London!

Congratulations to Float who have just been selected to go to Seedcamp London this year! Phil and Colin will be heading off to the camp on 27th July and is continuing a long tradition of Edinburgh based startups at the event (Hypernumbers and Loc8 Solutions being our previous entrants).

Float, if you don’t know it, is an integrated bank statement to cashflow forecasting tool. It lets you see what your exact balance at the end of the month will be, and differentiates between real and projected figures.It lets you create scenarios and makes sense of all the complexity of accounting figures. Hilary wrote in more detail about them a while back, which you should check out. Float itself is an add-on for Freeagent, another Edinburgh based startup.

Quick update: Kwwika iPad Competition Winners

Last week, we featured local service Kwwika (home of the real time web). Phil mentioned that they were running a competition at the time, where developers were encouraged to write a World Cup app using the Kwwika API. The winnders were announced a few days ago … (drumroll please …)

Aaron Bassett and Gergely Orosz for their apps respectively: World Cup Mash and Tweet for Your Team.

Aaron blogged and commented about his experiences of being in the competition here. Both Aaron and Gergely will recieve a brand new shiney iPad.

Incubator Difference Engine – Apply by 23rd July

Nurturing startups in the North East of England, The Difference Engine is an awesome new incubator programme ready to hear from Scottish entrepreneurs. They’ve made it through the first incubation round with nine cool digital companies supported, and now’s the time to secure a spot in the second batch (apply by 23rd July)! We absolutely loved The Difference Engine at Edinburgh TechMeetup this week, and their announcement is below with application details:

The mentor-lead accelerator program, The Difference Engine, started earlier this year, has opened applications for its second programme. Successful applicants will earn themselves £20k of seed capital and a place on an intensive 13 week mentoring programme (20 September – 17 December, 2010), in exchange for an 8% equity share. #Scotland140: Conversations Beyond the Twitter Box

The @cairnquartet added its thing to the bright and airy space at @CCA_Glasgow. A bottle of Cava was on every table. By the time I arrived people were seated in small groups and the air was buzzing. I spotted @redjotter and @rufflemuffin, but before I had the chance to flip flop over, I’d been introduced to @Tjmsandford and found myself joining a table, and talking about the challenges of bridging the gap between Design Methods and Product Management. No we weren’t talking about Twitter. That is how we met. We were talking about things that interested us and that we had in common.

@markofrespect managed the event perfectly. Before the night was out I’d have talked to twenty or so people and met Twitter buddy and founder of #media140 @AndeGregson from Down Under. There would be Tweeting throughout and a proliferation of blogging and news items the next day. It was a crowd that liked to chat [full list here http://twitter.com/scotland140/media140-june-17%5D and we did.
