One of the core, unwavering goals that we had when we founded StartupCafe, was to have a place where young Edinburgh-based startups can get heard, featured and talked about. This grew partly out of our frustrations that there was no central place for this type of news: it was too small to be picked up by local newspapers or big Blogs like TechCrunch, but yet, big enough for startups to get excited about.

In following up on more Edinburgh startups in the news, our very own Jessica was on BBC Click last week, chilling out in the garden and telling a friendly BBC reporter about TenBu Technologies’ new product nio.
nio is another security system that uses Bluetooth technology to keep valuables safe – software links electronic tags to mobile phones and PDAs.
She’s featured in the video around 3mins in. Go and check it out! There’s even a page on the BBC News website touting it as the latest gadget to have!

Hypernumbers with Blood on the Snow
Posted in Local News on 14 March, 2010| 1 Comment »
After CereProc’s impressive publicity drive last week, it turns out there’s no shortage of Edinburgh startups getting into the press.
Hypernumbers, led by Gordon Guthrie, was recently featured on Blood on the Snow, a BBC World Service programme (incidentally, if anyone knows why there is such a disturbing title to the show, do let me know). In the show, Gordon talks about the three startups he’s been involved in, and about his latest startup Hypernumbers. (more…)
David vs Goliath: MyPolice vs HMIC
Posted in Local News, tagged big fight, HMIC, mypolice on 10 March, 2010| 22 Comments »
HMIC (Government body assessing the performance of the police) are launching a site called My Police which will report on statistics for the police, this saturday (13th March) at 9.30am sometime (edit: the page has been changed in the past hour). A quick search on the internet reveals only one reference to the HMIC site; the West Midlands Police Authority’s Chief Executive’s report dated 18th Feb 2010. According to the report, it says:
HMIC have indicated that they intend to publish the ‘Police Report Card’ in the week beginning 8 March 2010. The information will be published as part of the HMIC website, likely to be entitled ‘My Police’. The card is likely to cover a number of themes to include local policing, protection from serious harm, anti-social behaviour and value for money. The report will be a mix of data reports, narrative, gradings and direction of travel.
On Monday we were notified by email from the HMIC that they are launching a product called My police at midnight tonight. Apparently, to our knowledge, it is a site about the public feeding back on police statistics (including how much they spend in their areas) to discern the best/worst police force in the UK and other such trivia’s.

I’ll Be Back: Internet Marketing Meetup Revived

I’m happy to see that the Internet Marketing Meetup Group is going to be back in action. Having been terrifically run by Hubdub gurus for a couple years, the group has gone through a quiet spell for a few months without a fearless leader. Think Hubdub life was picking up quickly with FanDuel launching as well, but it looks like the Internet Marketing Meetup torch is now being handed to a new team of three – Alan, Jay, and Eliza.
If you are interested in online marketing, social media, SEO, and all that goodness, then look out for these monthly events. Organisers have laid out their goals and plans for the meetup below, and I think they’ll be taking on a really nice format – I especially like the chance to get market updates from the group. Have a look and perhaps see you there! (more…)
