Its Day 3 into our South by Southwest adventures. Today, we recorded our podcast while standing in line at the temporary Apple store between East 6th St and Congress. We have shout outs for a bunch of people, including Lloyd Davis (@lloyddavies), Whitney Hess (@whitneyhess) and Marc Hemeon (@hemeon). We talk about what we got up to in our first day at the conference, with Jess heading off to Tim O’Reilly’s and WordPress sessions.

In the second part, we talk about the Ignite Austin talks with talks from (free) Ice Cream man, and we talk about what we’re looking forward to, including the panel sessions we’re attending (there’s a lean startup day on all day), meeting up with Jennie Lees (@jennielees) and the SXSWi opening party tonight.

Twitter, Gowalla, Foursquare, and now... stalking for dummies!

There are several apps around these days to help us track our friends, see who’s around us, and let’s be honest – stalk people we want to meet. But never before have I seen an app dedicated to the movement of a single individual.

As of this week, the honour of a dedicated app goes to Robert Scoble (@scobleizer), popular tech blogger and social media personality who is heavily followed around SXSW (South by Southwest). Dreamed up by witty Edinburgher Ewan Spence (@ewan), and innocently built by Tom Scott (@tomscott), the aptly named site www.IsScobleInThisRoom.com will answer the question every social media consultant is asking themselves around the conference…  Continue Reading »

Give us a shout if you want us to watch out for anything.

SourceRail

Ever tried to pick a show at the Edinburgh Festivals? It’s kind of crappy reading through many different
reviews, across a ton of review sites. How sensible would it be if someone
could distill and organise all the relevant reviews, and then publish them to a single site? Stephen
 Sheppard, founder of Edinburgh startup SourceRail aims to do just that.

SourceRail is a new kind of media monitoring service that combines precision search with web publishing. The idea initially arose as a way to improve search for reviews of Festival shows, but has since grown much larger. Stephen says, “I wanted something
very simple and straightforward that offered PR firms and companies all the media
 monitoring solutions they could want, while providing opportunities for everyone to
use the media sourced far more effectively online.”

The result: SourceRail provides a way to efficiently monitor and republish media coverage of brands, products, events, individuals, phenomena, etc. For users, this means an easier way to find out what other people are saying about you, and a much easier way of distributing and promoting that information.

Besides Stephen, the team behind SourceRail includes:

  • Graeme Mathieson, a senior software developer at Edinburgh online accounting startup FreeAgent, and a serial entrepreneur;
  • John Daniels, formerly of Daxtra
 Technologies, a leading company in the use of parsing and precision search in the recruitment industry; and
  • Claudiu Cioba, a freelance interface designer.

SourceRail reports that they will launch a closed beta in April, and will be scouting for interested early users for the service soon.

To stay up to date with their progress, or be invited to beta, register your interest at www.sourcerail.com or follow
 @Sourcerail on Twitter.

Special thanks to David for contributing to this post.

I thought Dave Black’s response to last wk’s post “Keep it simple, stupid” contained some good points so I’m posting it here for those who might find it useful.  StartupCafe’s Jess also made a good point about being forced to describe what you do in 7 words only – how many of us can do that?  It’s a constant challenge – but one worth taking on 🙂

In the meantime, here’s Dave:

“It’s common to find it difficult to articulate exactly what you are and what you do, whether you’re a business or an individual. We worry about making it sound too simple so we dress it up in flowery language, or we worry about making it sound too complicated so we struggle and stammer trying to simplify it.

Here are 3 common mistakes in self-description – mission/vision statements. Continue Reading »

Monday 7th March: Buzz from Mobile World Congress (Mobile Apps Group + Mobile Monday Edinburgh), 7pm at Inspace, UofE

This month will be a joint event with the Informatics Ventures Mobile Apps Group), and as such will follow their normal formula of an evening event, with beer and pizza to keep us going, in the wonderful Inspace. There will be no charge to attend but advance registration is required via eventbrite: http://momoedimar11.eventbrite.com/. The theme will be a series of three short reflections on what we heard, saw, and achieved at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a fortnight ago, taken with a variety of interesting twists.

Tuesday 8th March: E-Club “What Entrepreneurs Should Know about Raising VC in Today’s Environment,” 6:30pm at Business School Auditorium

Trevor Loy, Founder and Managing Director of Flywheel Ventures, will equip the audience of entrepreneurs with the knowledge necessary to gain an edge in the venture capital fundraising process. What should entrepreneurs know before pitching and negotiating a deal with a venture capitalist? What should the entrepreneur prepare in advance, and how might he or she gain an edge in the negotiation process? These are but two of the questions to be answered in this evening’s talk. A friend likes to call me contumacious.  I prefer to be described as willfully disobedient.  Both mean the same thing.  But which is easier to understand? Contumacious of course!  (Relax, I’m kidding).

I was cornered by a man this week who interrogated me for a while  before I thought it only fair to ask him what exactly he did for a living.  To my great irritation, he went on to ask a whole host of questions and make abstract statements, building up to the real answer. Several sentences later, I was still none the wiser, and my threadbare patience drove me to cry out Continue Reading »

First of all, thank you. Seriously. I understand that you’re some of the busiest people around, and everyone on the StartupCafe team wants to say a big thanks for taking the time out to give us feedback. In return, we listened and held a mammoth three-hour feedback session about what we’re going to be doing in the next few months.

In the end, we had 57 responses. Here are the responses and we’ll also walk you through what we’re doing as a direct result. Continue Reading »
