IGDA Scotland is a meetup for games developers and people in the general gaming industry.

Their next meetup is going to be next Wed (I know, it’s on the same night as Glasgow Techmeetup and an E-Club event as well). It’s going to be at Three Sisters down on Cowgate.

The presenter is Chris Wright, CEO of the new Edinburgh startup Game Analytics.

Congrats Dan and Joe!

I just received this very exciting invite to the Edinburgh Hacklab‘s first birthday party. The Hacklab is one of my favourite Edinburgh establishments, founded by some of our coolest local robot experts. Full details about the Hacklab and party below—see you there!

Edinburgh Hacklab is the city’s first hackerspace, part of a global movement of spaces created by like-minded individuals worldwide who love to make and hack things. By creating a shared space to do this, we provide access to better facilities than we could each have at home, as well as opportunities to collaborate, learn, and socialise.

We started a year ago with 12 founding members and have grown to 20+ paying members plus many regular visitors spanning diverse backgrounds in engineering, art, and science, using the space in hobby, academic, and professional capacities.

We’ve decked out the lab with a laser cutter, CNC mill and 3D printer letting us fabricate almost anything, we’ve run regular open nights and other events and built loads of cool stuff. And we still have more planned over the next year, including moving to a new and bigger space.

To mark the occasion we are celebrating in style and have booked out the entire ground floor at the Out Of the Blue Drill Hall, complete with bar. As well as the opportunity for a drink with our members and friends, the lab will be open and we’ll be inviting you to see the space and some of the projects we’ve completed over the past year. There will also be a raffle with some great prizes donated by sponsors including Oomlout, O’Reilly, and Los Cardos.

When: Saturday 24th of September 2011 starting at 16:30 till 21:00 (plus pub afterwards for the hardcore)
Where: Out of the Blue, 36 Dalmeny Street, Edinburgh EH6 8RG (map: http://g.co/maps/xcuux)

Some changes to StartupCafe

The 30sec version:

We’re going to try to be more efficient in how we manage events and job listings on StartupCafe.

Events: add them onto Open Tech Calendar – and you can view them on our ‘Events’ tab. Add ** to the start if it is a one-off event.

Job listings: add them to workinstartups.com – and mark them as Edinburgh – and you can view them on our ‘Jobs’ tab.

Also, if you’re launching something or got some exciting news, drop us a line at hello@startupcafe.co.uk.

Yesterday marked the first day of Freshers Week at Edinburgh Uni (just in case you were wondering what the influx of people were). Of course, new term means a new series of talks from Edinburgh’s own Entrepreneurship club (E-Club).

You can see the full programme of events here:

http://www.business-school.ed.ac.uk/about/school-events

This year, I’m particularly pleased to see E-Club teaming up with MBM Commercial to produce a series of talks by local entrepreneurs about their success story. The series kicks off with Chris Tiso from Tiso Clothing, followed by Dr Aydin Kurt-Elli, CEO of Lumison.

E-Club events are free to attend but you are recommended to register beforehand. Events are held at the Business School just off Buccleuch Place, Edinburgh.

Local mobile group, MoMoEdinburgh is co-hosting an event with the Vodafone Smart Accessibility Foundation and ICT KTN to create an unique event to inspire local apps developers and entrepreneurs to make useful apps for people with impairments.

The event is on 16th September, starting at 3pm at InSpace. Here are the details below:

You might be interested to know that the first time Eric Ries of Lean Startup and David Heinemeier Hansson engaged in debate was actually in London last year. Or that, at the very same time and place, several conversations were starting between designers and entrepreneurs, laying the foundations for the Lean UX movement we’re seeing grow today.   And the producer of Business Model Generation, who is the CEO of Business Models Inc., was there too, creating the first connections between Business Model Generation and Customer Development – which is why you see “business model canvasses” being used so often as a startup tool today. This was all at an event called Leancamp.

Jacques Mattheij explains the “not so well known” process of due diligence.

If you’re running a company and you are doing something that either requires an investment or attracts the attention of competitors or other parties interested in buying a part or all of your stock or your business then sooner or later you’ll run into the words ‘Due Diligence’.

The response to those words ranges from indifference to fear or even hostility, mostly based in a lack of understanding or familiarity with the process. In this (small) guide I’ll try to clarify the process and the reasons why it exists, give an overview of the process and a bunch of tips on how to successfully navigate a due diligence.

Whilst the latest talk around the Edinburgh tech circle has been about the Turing Festival towards the end of the month, I’m actually looking forward to the other festival happening this coming Thursday and Friday that we don’t often hear about: Edinburgh Interactive Festival.

Formerly known as the Edinburgh Games Festival, in recent years, the festival organisers have embraced the emergence of new media interactivity and broadened its appeal and audience. Continue Reading »
