  • Who would like to have a meaningful impact on the world?
  • Got a cool idea but lack the skills to bring it to life?
  • Or want to use your superpowers in design, web dev or business to help develop someone else’s vision for improving education, healthcare, finance, community or mobile?

The Idea Transform team are organising a startup bootcamp weekend where people pitch ideas on a Friday evening, the audience votes for ideas they’d like to work on and people form teams to work on projects over the rest of the weekend.  The event aims to inspire projects that can deliver long-term change across the globe.  These projects will then be judged, and a winner announced on Sunday evening.

Teams will be supported and inspired throughout the weekend by mentors and speakers who will be on hand to answer questions and offer advice. The event will be held in Cambridge on 20th-22nd April 2012 at the Cambridge Judge Business School and is supported by the University of Cambridge’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning.

I’ve been told by the organiser that last year’s event saw many make their way down from Edinburgh and Glasgow so, if this is of interest, check out their website for more details.  Developers in particular are especially encouraged to attend!   (more…)

There’s a wonderful conference on in London this June, and with an impressive lineup of tech & startup speakers I dare say the Inspire Conference is worth a trip across the border! Tickets are an investment at £299 +VAT (or £149 +VAT for students!), so I’m sorry it’s not a free event, but I’d encourage you to have a look and see if the connections and experience may be worth your while.

Running 7th-8th June, the Inspire Conference is brought to you by the folks that created Launch48, so we’ve been very impressed with them before. You can have a sneak peak at the speakers so far – including Michael Birch (founder of Bebo) and Alex Breuer (design editor of The Times) – and I’ve included more details from the conference team below.

Note the “early bird” price lasts until this Monday 28th Feb, so if you’re going to book eventually, the earlier the better deal you’ll get. Are you eager to go, but can’t possibly afford a ticket? *Please comment below if so!* We are putting out a call for help to Informatics Ventures, Launch.ed, and SIE in case one of them is able to help subsidise some Scottish entrepreneurs who consider anything beyond Tesco Value noodles to be a splurge. We hear ya!! Make sure you comment below or email me jess [at] startupcafe.co.uk if a subsidy would make a real difference – I can’t promise anything, but I promise to ask! More details: (more…)

First of all, whatever you’re celebrating, happy holidays! I brought the Scottish rain with me to California, so I’m not very popular back home right now, but sending lots of good wishes to Edinburgh and beyond this week. Hope you have a wonderful time filled with good food, good company, and some well-earned rest! Well ok, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad 🙂

Monday 20th December: Listening Lunch #2 & Christmas Drinks, 12pm on Appleton Tower 8th Floor

An invitation from Informatics Ventures to “get everyone’s input on things that Informatics Ventures could do to support you,” to hear what’s working and what could be improved. I know some folks are boycotting this meeting after the last one was – to put it mildly, disastrous – but I *hope* this one is more productive and less defensive. At the very least, enjoy a free buffet from 12 noon and drinks after the meeting. But watch what you say if you don’t want an eviction notice the next day (possibly unrelated, but a terribly unfortunate coincidence). You can see the online forum for discussions: Appleton Venture Community.

Wednesday 22nd December: Glasgow TechMeetup, 7pm at 103 Trongate 5th Floor

Monthly gathering for anyone interested in tech, from developers to startups to innocent curiosities. It’s a thriving grassroots effort, and each month generally features a small variety of presentations to share expertise on what people are up to and what they have learned along the way. Not sure what presentations are this month, but looks like it’s going ahead… Just turn up, and enjoy free beer, pizza and good chat! (more…)
