Did you know that Edinburgh is hosting Stanford’s annual Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REE) this year? It’s time to show our friends across the pond and across Europe that Edinburgh is one hip happening place for startups. Well, and it’s a chance for you to showcase your startup/spinout/design project to an audience of rather well-connected people around the world!

The exhibition event (REE Fest) is Wednesday 8th September, starting 5:30pm in the Informatics Forum. Exhibiting is free, but this is the last week to sign up so grab a spot before you write your next email! And if you want to join the festivities but exhibiting doesn’t suit, you can actually attend the exhibition portion free too – sign-up info for exhibitors and attendees thanks to Mike Clouser: Continue Reading »

Tuesday 27th July: Social Boom Birthday Party, 6:30pm at Roxy Art House

Social Booms are fun, free and informal networking events for local individuals involved in the creative industries. If you live or work in Edinburgh and are keen to collaborate, network, learn new things, be inspired or find out what’s happening in your creative field, then Social Boom is for you! Our first Edinburgh Social Boom (#EdSocBoom) in May was really successful, so we’ve decided to host another one! This time we will have some very special sponsors and lots of birthday fun, including a cake-fuelled opportunity to raise money for Breast Cancer Care

Tuesday 27th July: Mashable Meetup, Edinburgh organiser still not found 😦 … But happy 5th birthday Mashable!

As Rachel shouted out earlier, anyone want to organise this for the future? I am trying not to get involved in organising any more events, but will happily attend! Continue Reading »

When Stuart Roebuck (ProInnovate) was checking out his web app on his iPad through 3G, he noticed something very strange … it didn’t display properly when previously, it had been fine. He switched between 3G and wifi, and for some reason, he noticed that his web app displayed differently depending on the connection.

Think you could be negotiating better deals, salaries or terms? Want to bring more creativity into your business strategy? Without getting into intense gender debates, there are some great workshops for women who are running or looking to start up awesome companies. Girl Geek Scotland has identified three areas that women tend to find a bit more challenging, and residential workshops are on offer to help accelerate skills in the areas of negotiation, funding, and creatvity. Spots are fully subsidised by Informatics Ventures, so don’t worry about the cost. Workshops are taking place in Stirling this Autumn, so have a look and I suggest you claim a spot quickly if you are interested. More details below:

Girl Geek Scotland is hosting a series of residential workshops to complement their recent, hugely successful speaker series on ‘Creativity, Computing and Entrepreneurialism’. The workshops, which are aimed at women who are thinking about starting, or have recently started, a Scottish business, will work around themes that will target what are believed to be existing weaknesses in female business culture, namely: Negotiation, Funding Strategies, and Creativity in Business. Congratulations to Float who have just been selected to go to Seedcamp London this year! Phil and Colin will be heading off to the camp on 27th July and is continuing a long tradition of Edinburgh based startups at the event (Hypernumbers and Loc8 Solutions being our previous entrants).

Float, if you don’t know it, is an integrated bank statement to cashflow forecasting tool. It lets you see what your exact balance at the end of the month will be, and differentiates between real and projected figures. It lets you create scenarios and makes sense of all the complexity of accounting figures. Hilary wrote in more detail about them a while back, which you should check out. Float itself is an add-on for Freeagent, another Edinburgh based startup.

Congrats Phil and Colin!

In our familiar 60 second interview this week, we’re interviewing Douglas Holmes, co-founder at Mobius Digital. Doug completed a BSc in Computer Science and A.I. at Edinburgh University last year. Tuesday 20th July: Launch Lab, 9am at Renroc (89-91 Montgomery St)

The Launch Lab is a weekly session geared toward anyone who owns or is starting their own business. A highly varied group of energetic, intelligent people gather to exchange ideas, share critiques and encouragement, and feed each others’ vitality. At the beginning of most sessions there is a presentation on any aspect of entrepeneurship; thereafter we discuss the talk then get down to the business of networking, gossiping, and drinking coffee.

Tuesday 20th July: .CO Domain Names Go on Sale!

Think .co is going to make it big? FYI if you want to register your startup’s domain name on .co, or if you want to try for some cool .co web addresses, today’s the first day you can buy them for normal prices. So far I’ve seen £18.99/year on Fasthosts, but holler if you find a better deal!

This is a guest post by Graham Mainds who is part of Edinburgh City Libraries. In this guest post, Graham highlights all the resources you can get access to when you’re starting your business.

It’s made of plastic, you keep it in your purse or wallet and it could mean the difference between your startup failing and succeeding. What is it? A library card. And you can enjoy the benefits without ever setting foot in a library.

Libraries have always had a key role in enabling investment and growth in our city, and we’re always looking at new and innovative ways of providing the information businesses need to succeed. Continue Reading »

Aaron blogged and commented about his experiences of being in the competition here. Both Aaron and Gergely will recieve a brand new shiney iPad.
