Barcamp Scotland is the annual get-together for people working in tech for the past three years. For those of you that don’t know about the event, the definition of BarCamp is:

BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from attendees.  Programmers, coders, VCs, Angels, investors, marketers, ad people, public service, creatives… all welcome to share and learn from each other. Welcome back to our first 60 second interview for 2010! Our first victim interviewee this year is Andrew Mitchell from Informatics Ventures! As part of the IV team, Andrew helps to deliver a range of support for entrepreneurs around the High-tech space: including the MIT Workshops, the annual Engage Invest Exploit showcase, plus supporting a whole load of local events such as Techmeetup.

Andrew started his career in entrepreneurial education back in Cambridge – working for University of Cambridge’s Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning where he designed, built and delivered educational programmes on behalf of the Cambridge-MIT Institute Limited (CMI). Then he moved to sunny Australia to work in a business incubator, before swapping his BBQ for an umbrella to come to Edinburgh. Continue Reading »

nio is another security system that uses Bluetooth technology to keep valuables safe – software links electronic tags to mobile phones and PDAs.

She’s featured in the video around 3mins in. Go and check it out! There’s even a page on the BBC News website touting it as the latest gadget to have!

After CereProc’s impressive publicity drive last week, it turns out there’s no shortage of Edinburgh startups getting into the press.

Hypernumbers, led by Gordon Guthrie, was recently featured on Blood on the Snow, a BBC World Service programme (incidentally, if anyone knows why there is such a disturbing title to the show, do let me know). In the show, Gordon talks about the three startups he’s been involved in, and about his latest startup Hypernumbers. Continue Reading »

HMIC (Government body assessing the performance of the police) are launching a site called My Police which will report on statistics for the police, this saturday (13th March) at 9.30am sometime (edit: the page has been changed in the past hour).  A quick search on the internet reveals only one reference to the HMIC site; the West Midlands Police Authority’s Chief Executive’s report dated 18th Feb 2010. According to the report, it says:

HMIC have indicated that they intend to publish the ‘Police Report Card’ in the week beginning 8 March 2010. The information will be published as part of the HMIC website, likely to be entitled ‘My Police’. The card is likely to cover a number of themes to include local policing, protection from serious harm, anti-social behaviour and value for money. The report will be a mix of data reports, narrative, gradings and direction of travel.
Of course, the team behind the “exactly” named MyPolice startup which has spun out of Social Innovation Camp last summer was not amused. Lauren Currie, Director at MyPolice sent out an email at 9am this morning, explaining the story behind the whole situation:

On Monday we were notified by email from the HMIC that they are launching a product called My police at midnight tonight. Apparently, to our knowledge, it is a site about the public feeding back on police statistics (including how much they spend in their areas) to discern the best/worst police force in the UK and other such trivia’s.

I’m happy to see that the Internet Marketing Meetup Group is going to be back in action. Having been terrifically run by Hubdub gurus for a couple years, the group has gone through a quiet spell for a few months without a fearless leader. Think Hubdub life was picking up quickly with FanDuel launching as well, but it looks like the Internet Marketing Meetup torch is now being handed to a new team of three – Alan, Jay, and Eliza.

If you are interested in online marketing, social media, SEO, and all that goodness, then look out for these monthly events. Organisers have laid out their goals and plans for the meetup below, and I think they’ll be taking on a really nice format – I especially like the chance to get market updates from the group. Have a look and perhaps see you there! Continue Reading »
