Where do I go? Free what?If there were an occasion to use your time warping skills, this Wednesday night would be a good chance. With 3 2 great events to choose from, it’s a shame they’re scheduled for the same slot, but you are sure to have a great mid-week outing if you can make it to one of these. Anyone with a stake in cloud computing may like to check out Cloudcamp, Glaswegians gather for Tech Meetup, and we’re especially excited to see the Entrepreneurship Club season begin again. There is definitely something for everyone this week, so I hope you’re not hosting any Wednesday dinner parties.

E-Club: Wednesday, 23rd Sept, 6:30pm at UofE Business School LT1

This is the first Entrepreneurship Club event of the academic year and is open to all students, startups, and members of the wider community. An assortment of E-Club members will present their business ideas, so come hear what everyone is up to and meet some cool folks. Hey, StartupCafe will be presenting, so you can Continue Reading »

Dave Sapien - he's very friendly and cheerful, really! Our interrogation this week targets Dave Sapien, a friendly gaming developer with a unique and intriguing focus. I don’t have any babies on the way (much to my dad’s disappointment), but Me and the Giants is a lovable Glasgow startup and we are excited to see where these guys wind up! Perhaps we should call this one a 120 second interview, couldn’t fit Dave’s enthusiasm into a single minute =).

What’s your startup, and your role? Me and the Giants is a development studio centred round making games for young children, founded by myself, Will Adams and Rory Lowe. Our aim is to make great games that help improve the cognitive abilities of young children while augmenting communication between Continue Reading »

hoodeasy taking over the hoodie worldhoodeasy is everywhere. Whether I’m reaching for my comfy E-Club hoodie or reading up on Business Forum events, the enjoyable brand is brought back to mind (I promise, now that you’re aware, you’ll see it all over the place too). For those of you not yet familiar with Richard Burton’s creation, hoodeasy is an Edinburgh startup that takes the hassle out of groups ordering customised clothing. You’ll likely recognise Richard since he’s active in local groups and events, though his haircut earlier this year still throws me.

As the company is doing remarkably well and pursuing further growth, hoodeasy is now recruiting university reps to help spread the word and make life easier for societies across the UK. Excited by the new opportunities, we checked in with Richard to understand how hoodeasy got to be so cool and who he’s looking for at the moment.

Why does hoodeasy rock? Continue Reading »

Is live music your thing, or does Spotify satisfy? Yeah, that's a real pic of Rihanna =)We all waited in suspense to get Apple’s verdict on the Spotify app and sighed with relief after it was finally accepted into the iPhone app store last week. Well, some of us were looking forward to a good battle, but it was a nice outcome nonetheless. The decision proved highly popular as Spotify became the top free app in the iTunes store within 48 hours of its release. The catch that it can only be used by subscribers, however, has raised complaints from folks objecting to paying £10 per month (sorry, that’s the going model…). In light of the Spotify/Apple drama and Napster closing down earlier this summer, we ask the question:

How do you currently consume music and how will it change in the future?

Bela: I think I’m slightly behind with the way that I consume music.  I watch music channels on TV and I Continue Reading »

Who moved my cheese?!

cheeseI briefly touched on attitudes and responses towards change in an earlier post which is the reason for this quick post. I stumbled across a book at a charity shop recently. It’s about four characters: Sniff, Scurry, Hem and Haw. The first two are mice; the last two are littlepeople. The book is about their relationship to change.

Who Moved My Cheese, written by Spencer Johnson, is a well known book and has been out for a while. Though it sneakily jumped off the shelf and into my small hands only recently, I had heard about it much earlier but not gotten Continue Reading »

NetworkingThe brilliant Silicon Valley Speaker Series over at the E-Club is beginning again in the next few weeks. While the schedule is being finalised, here is the list of confirmed speakers for this year … and it doesn’t disappoint. Bill Joos – aka the pitch doctor – has been a regular at the Valley Speaker series for the past few years and it’s always a never-to-be-missed session. Another highlight is Alex Ohanian who is the co-founder of Reddit.

As always, the enigmatic Sarah Luger is your contact for E-Club, and I’m sure she’ll come up with more details of events soon.

Launch.ed logoCan you hear them? Yes, it’s the sound of freshers and the rest of the students coming back from their summer holidays. We thought we would ask Hilary Singer from Launch.ed what their plans are this coming semester … (oh and remember to check out their new website!)

So many events, I actually wound up asking for orange juiceThe previous week was absolutely packed with tech and business events (Events Menu here for a recap), and unless you completely abandoned all other obligations including sleep, you probably didn’t catch them all. Luckily for you, we were running around spastically to fit in quite a few… So in order to keep you in the loop, we thought we’d each share which event we liked most and what interesting things we took away with us. Our highlights below, but if you had a different favourite, add your thoughts too!

Thomas: Last week, we were lucky to be invited at RunRev’s annual conference, organised this year in Edinburgh at the Dynamic Earth. Three words: what a venue! I went to a number of events there before, but they topped everything Continue Reading »
