Distributed Denial of Tatties

Over the last few months, there have been a number of hashtag campaigns on Twitter. The general goal is to encourage other users to use the tag often enough that it appears in the list of “trending topics” every user sees, which should raise awareness of the cause. Some of these are trivial, like the recent #songsincode or the slightly older #quantickstesticles but several seem to be aiming for higher things. The #iranelection tag was pervasive at the beginning of summer, helping to spread the news of events as they happened in Iran, but it also acted as a platform for western supporters to protest against the behaviour of the Iranian government. More recently, in reaction to conservative American FUD about death panels and severe criticism of the NHS, the Continue Reading »

Heriot WattThe International Entrepreneurship Educators Conference is next week, 2-4 Sept. at Heriot-Watt. Hilary Singer, Launch.ed intern and StartupCafe BFF, shares the details with us here:

The Scottish Institute for Enterprise is helping to organise the event. They’re looking for volunteers to help staff the conference. Volunteers would get free food and drink throughout the day, and would get to hear some cool speakers/go to cool workshops.

Some of the sessions include “Ethical Dilemmas for the Entrepreneur” and “Four Ways to Find Enterprising Ideas”. You can see the full schedule here. This is a way to get into the event for free (though there will be some work involved!).

By Michael Clouser, Ph.D. Candidate, Entrepreneurship and Innovation Policy, School of Business at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland

Edinburgh, Scotland  06 July 2009:  In response to Sunday’s article in the Scotsman “100,000 jobs to go across Scotland in downturn” I would like to first alert the readers of Hi-Tech Scotland, and the public at-large,  to the notion that the downturn may turn out to be more than just a recession that lasts for a short time. The so-called experts who predicted it would be ending about now are now telling us next year this time; and others, who aren’t heard, are predicting much worse? Who knows? But we should prepare for the worse and act as if it is.  The danger in not taking this looming depression into account is that Continue Reading »

Better Place is best known for its marketing effort on the deployment of an infrastructure to make electric vehicles viable. Their solution is simple: get car manufacturers to sell electric cars on a large scale, and build a network of battery swapping stations spread across the country. This removes the main technological limitation batteries have compared to combustion engines on gas tanks: range.

Renault-Nissan will be starting the production of their first non-prototype electric vehicle from 2011. The three vehicle models will be sold in Israel and Denmark. According to Wikipedia, Israel is 22,000 km2, whilst Denmark is 43,000 km2, and Scotland is 79,000 km2. One of Better Place’s goals is to try to recharge batteries with as much renewable energy as possible, making electric vehicles much cleaner than their gas siblings. Continue Reading »

opensourceGreg Soper, the managing director of SalesAgility is organising the Scottish Open Source Awards. The event has three aims: stimulate, promote and reward. Greg started his company four years ago, and found that most business owners were not aware of what the open source offer is. Open source software is indeed used by large companies successfully all around the world, but smaller businesses tend to trust brands over collaborative open solutions.

The awards night is about educating people on what open source software has to offer, and put it at the level of the proprietary software offerings. The organisers aspire to get the new generation to embrace the open source movement. Greg spoke at the University of Edinburgh School of Informatics Tech Meetup last wednesday, where he explained that open source software can compete with proprietary solutions. Continue Reading »
