Yesterday, this group converged on Edinburgh for the tenth annual European Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REE). Over the next two days, they’ll be discussing and designing the future of entrepreneurship education in schools and universities across the continent, as well as determining the types of funding and startup support programmes that are available in the next decade. Jess is away to Copenhagen for a few days, so I’m here to serve up your events menu this week. This is week really busy, seeing MoMo, Launch Lab, REE Fest and Barcamp all happening at once!

Mobile Monday, Monday 6th Sept, 12.30pm at Centotre

One topic in mobile that has regularly been mentioned at previous events, but without anyone having a massively strong grasp of the details is Near Field Communications or NFCs. This seems to be an area that is starting to come to life. As a result, this month’s MoMo is about NFCs. (more…)

This evening, I had the pleasure of getting an invite along to the Edinburgh College of Art postgraduate degree show. Normally, this wouldn’t be something that I would cover, but graduate shows can be places to find young designers to work with.

There were some really neat pieces and here are the designers on exhibit: (more…)

Camping seems to be the latest rage at the moment. Of course, we’re not talking about outdoor camping (it might be a little cold for that … even during the summer) but the user-generated unconferences. Barcamps, if you’re not familiar with the concept, are conferences without a pre-planned agenda and relies on the participants to give talks or chair discussions on particular topics. These unconferences can be great places to engage with people on similar topics in a format that’s much more accessible than traditional talks with Q&As.

If you’re intrigued as to where to pitch your tent (oh dear, I can hear the pun police sirens) then here are your upcoming choices for the next two weeks: (more…)

Tuesday 10th August: Dorkbot Alba, 8pm at Forest Cafe (3 Bristo Place)

**I’m excited to say Dorkbot Alba is now on our radar, and only sorry I didn’t know about it sooner. If you’re doing anything with electricity, or want to be, do check it out**

Dorkbot is a group of affiliated organizations worldwide that sponsor grassroots meetings of artists, engineers, designers, scientists, inventors, and anyone else working under the very broad umbrella of “electronic art”. Here in Edinburgh we meet bi-monthly at the Forest Cafe, 2nd and 4th Tuesdays, 8pm onwards, upstairs in the Action Room. We hope to mix people with crazy ideas with people who can make them happen. Mostly we chit-chat, but things do happen, sometimes, and if you have an idea, or if you like making things, we’d like to hear from you. (more…)

Launch48!

Calling all Scottish startups: if you have a demo-ready product or service and want to tap into the money, experience and network in London, pack your bags and head to the Launch48 Showcase.

The event, on 2 September, is a new offering from the talented Launch48 team, who have organised a series of top-notch startup events in the U.K. and abroad. Startup Cafe reps attended one of their weekend events earlier this year and were blown away by the calibre of the attendees.

High-profile figures from PayPal, Yahoo, Seedcamp and Tech Crunch attended, not to mention VCs and Angel Investors. Other major sponsors include Amazon, Sun Microsystems and Vodaphone. The place was packed with experience, enthusiasm, expertise and money.

But that event was about building new companies. This one is about showcasing your own. And if there was one thing amiss about our previous experience at Launch48, it was the lack of Scottish tech and talent.

So seriously, pack your bags. It’s £10 to attend the Showcase, and free to exhibit–though you’ll have to apply for a space. Deadline 20 August.

And if you want to join the festivities but exhibiting doesn’t suit, you can actually attend the exhibition portion free too – sign-up info for exhibitors and attendees thanks to Mike Clouser: (more…)

Tuesday 27th July: Social Boom Birthday Party, 6:30pm at Roxy Art House

Social Booms are fun, free and informal networking events for local individuals involved in the creative industries. If you live or work in Edinburgh and are keen to collaborate, network, learn new things, be inspired or find out what’s happening in your creative field, then Social Boom is for you! Our first Edinburgh Social Boom (#EdSocBoom) in May was really successful, so we’ve decided to host another one! This time we will have some very special sponsors and lots of birthday fun, including a cake-fuelled opportunity to raise money for Breast Cancer Care

Tuesday 27th July: Mashable Meetup, Edinburgh organiser still not found 😦 … But happy 5th birthday Mashable!

As Rachel shouted out earlier, anyone want to organise this for the future? I am trying not to get involved in organising any more events, but will happily attend! (more…)
