I’ve taken a week off from the world to spend time at Enterprisers, a fabulous creation of Cambridge University and MIT. It’s a bit business bootcamp meets American summer camp, and this rendition is taking place in nearby Stirling. Walking into the room, you’d have little sense of being in Scotland though as the remarkably international group has left the Brits a minority.

So, what is actually taking place here? You might say it’s a four day workshop to develop entrepreneurial skills. You might say it’s a business rendition of Obama’s ‘Yes we can’. Or you might say it’s a social opportunity for computer science, business, and artsy students. But more noteworthy than the actual activity is the bit of magic in the air – the world has come together and it feels like anything could happen. (more…)

Events Menu: 12-18 April

I’m a bit short on time at the moment, but thought I’d resort to an abbreviated form so you can at least check out the main events this week. [P.S. I’ve  added the links now! :)]

Monday-Thurs 12th-16th April: Enterprisers at Stirling Management Centre

A four day residential programme for students of all disciplines and degree levels, Enterprisers is about building entrepreneurial confidence and a can-do attitude! Run by Cambridge University and sponsored by Informatics Ventures, this is sure to be a fantastic week for anyone who’s come along – I’ve facilitated a couple times and am very excited to be back!

Monday-Tues 12th-13th April: MIT Workshop – Building Management Teams – at Stirling Management Centre

A two-day workshop sponsored by Informatics Ventures, and the theme this time is helping tech startups build world class management teams.

Tuesday 13th April: Launch Lab (aka Entrepreneurs Coffee Morning), 9 am at Renroc

The Entrepreneurs Coffee Morning has rebranded, so welcome to Launch Lab! Love the name, love the new faces, go along if you’d like to chat informally to a supportive group of other folks starting up businesses. Ian Cander of 3Cap Consulting will be giving a presentation on the topic of how small- to medium- size enterprises can grow their capital and value. (more…)

Monday 5th April: The International Science Festival has begun!

Whether you’re observing Easter Monday or already back at your desk/armchair/coffee shop, I hope you’ve noticed that the Science Festival is livening up Edinburgh for a couple weeks. The Informatics Forum will be hosting several cool talks and events, including the intriguing Huxley’s Lab play you may have seen dancing on the Forum roof gardens. Also we’re really excited for a multi-touch Science Festival app to debut in the Forum, but I’ll let Kate fill you in on that later 🙂

Tuesday 6th April: Entrepreneurs & Freelancers Coffee, 9am at Renroc (think again, and go!)

Adding a twist to the newest coffee morning, the first meetup of the month – ie. this one – will feature a few startup elevator pitches so the group can provide feedback to the brave volunteers (before they meet with investors, funding bodies, clients, etc). Getting the freelancers combined with the startups also seems like a very productive mix, so I’m excited to see the collaboration. While I initially questioned the need for another coffee group, this meetup is certainly proving its worth and I would like to publicly withdraw my skepticism. See you there! (more…)

Well, we couldn’t all make it to Austin this month for the rush and excitement that is South By Southwest (SXSW). But that doesn’t mean we have to miss out on all the lessons and ideas that were exchanged last week in the lone star state.

While SXSW is a big music and film scene, it is also a breeding ground for innovation. The full festival is divided into three parts, Music + Film + Interactive, with the latter described as:

An incubator of cutting-edge technologies, the SXSW® Interactive Festival brings together the world’s most creative web developers, designers, bloggers, wireless innovators, content producers, programmers, widget inventors and (more…)
