So many events, I actually wound up asking for orange juiceThe previous week was absolutely packed with tech and business events (Events Menu here for a recap), and unless you completely abandoned all other obligations including sleep, you probably didn’t catch them all. Luckily for you, we were running around spastically to fit in quite a few… So in order to keep you in the loop, we thought we’d each share which event we liked most and what interesting things we took away with us. Our highlights below, but if you had a different favourite, add your thoughts too!

Thomas: Last week, we were lucky to be invited at RunRev’s annual conference, organised this year in Edinburgh at the Dynamic Earth. Three words: what a venue! I went to a number of events there before, but they topped everything (more…)

A favourite hobby of all GTD-ers is to talk about their own customised form of GTD. Just look at here or here for instance. If you use GTD, please share your tips below (or leave your name in the comments – it would awesome to have a GTD Geek night).

My Implementation

To give you a favour of what to expect, here’s some of the parts to my implementation of GTD (the full system would take too long to explain!) (more…)

Getting to Plan BGetting to plan B, breaking through to a better business model is the authors’ second book. John Mullins first authored The New Business Road Test, which has become a well used textbook in many university entrepreneurship courses. Randy Komisar is the author of The Monk and the Riddle: The Art of Creating a Life While Making a Living, a bestseller in every entrepreneurs’ reading list.

This new book is an attempt at educating entrepreneurs on how to change an initial business idea into a proper business with a sustainable business model. They designed a framework for entrepreneurs to use based on “four key building blocks”: analogs, antilogs, leaps of faith, and dashboards. (more…)

Where to go? What to do?After a wild week of business and tech events, all we can say is ‘hold on, there’s more!’ Hope you got your rest this summer because the events scene is in full swing. Join the StartupCafe fun!

Party Time!We announced this event on our facebook group, but apologise for not announcing it on the blog earlier… We’re having StartupCafe drinks this Friday (4th Sept), 7pm, at Vodka Revolution on the corner between Chambers St and George IV Bridge.

If you didn’t know, Jess and I share the same birthday (which was earlier this week!) and so we thought it’d be a really good excuse for a few drinks! Please join us if you can – we have an area reserved and I think there’s even potentially some free nibbles for the early birds!

Distributed Denial of Tatties

Distributed Denial of Tatties

Over the last few months, there have been a number of hashtag campaigns on Twitter. The general goal is to encourage other users to use the tag often enough that it appears in the list of “trending topics” every user sees, which should raise awareness of the cause. Some of these are trivial, like the recent #songsincode or the slightly older #quantickstesticles but several seem to be aiming for higher things. The #iranelection tag was pervasive at the beginning of summer, helping to spread the news of events as they happened in Iran, but it also acted as a platform for western supporters to protest against the behaviour of the Iranian government. More recently, in reaction to conservative American FUD about death panels and severe criticism of the NHS, the (more…)

Heriot WattThe International Entrepreneurship Educators Conference is next week, 2-4 Sept. at Heriot-Watt. Hilary Singer, Launch.ed intern and StartupCafe BFF, shares the details with us here:

The Scottish Institute for Enterprise is helping to organise the event. They’re looking for volunteers to help staff the conference. Volunteers would get free food and drink throughout the day, and would get to hear some cool speakers/go to cool workshops.

Some of the sessions include “Ethical Dilemmas for the Entrepreneur” and “Four Ways to Find Enterprising Ideas”. You can see the full schedule here. This is a way to get into the event for free (though there will be some work involved!).
