This Thursday, homeless startups can find not just shelter but also wifi, free coffee, and a supportive community at The Melting Pot on Rose Street. The co-working space hosts monthly sessions open to all (aka “Jellies”), and thanks to the lovely folks there this month’s gathering is startup themed – woooo!

So whether you work from expensive/lonely coffee shops, or whether you could use a change of scenery from your usual office, I encourage you to join in the warm Jelly spirit and venture to The Melting Pot 9am-9pm. Spaces are limited – details copied below, and if it’s your cup of tea, you can sign up here to claim your space. Special thanks to Marie for coordinating to make this happen for the startup world 🙂

DAD botSharing information online is complicated. Online, efficiency and accessibility frequently come at the expense of security and privacy. This is true whether we’re talking about the posts on your Facebook page, or holiday photos. Enter DAD, a London-based startup that aims to make private secure sharing simple.

From what I can tell, DAD’s an installable app like DropBox, but potentially more user-friendly, more tailored to sharing media like photos, movies, and music, and specifically designed for use within friend and family groups. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to try DAD myself, because there’s currently no Mac version—but it’s coming soon!

We got to know DAD when its CEO and founder, Julian Ranger, came to speak at Launch48 Edinburgh in October 2010. Julian is a serial entrepreneur; in the past, he sold one of his companies to U.S. arms giant Lockheed Martin. Continue Reading »

Office SpaceAbout the author: Rob Clymo writes on behalf of www.officegenie.co.uk, the UK’s first proper online marketplace for desk space and shared office space.

Starting up a new business involves sorting out all manner of priorities, not least of which is finding office space where you can run the operation. Of course, many start-ups don’t require an awful lot of office space, and individuals are probably happy working from home initially. Continue Reading »

Hey guys, lots of gossip from yesterday as we’ve been keeping busy! Thanks so much for all the tweets back to us, it’s been really good to hear from you along the way. Our shout outs go to Chris and Andrew of Tiziano Project, Alexis and Dave of Hipmunk, Mona of Apture, and many more… In this podcast trio, we cover our panel adventures, a meetup of cool entrepreneurial women, and the UK Trade & Investment BBQ full of friendly faces.

Our nightlife continued with am amazing storytelling event – Fray Cafe, followed by the Search Party (thanks Hipmunk, Blekko, Chomp!), meeting the Guardian team while in line for tacos, my first double cheeseburger, new friends at 2am, and staying up to watch the sunrise… well ok, one of us was more sensible…

@Dreamstake is a network for creative entrepreneurs and last week I attended one of their events: Female Superheroes. When events like this go well, it’s like cocaine for business-minded folk.  Suddenly you feel great and want to rush away to execute your ideas!  There was a good turn out, lots of energy and inspirational stories.  It was great to see such enthusiasm. Several cool women gave presentations but I only have room to give a quick mention to a couple of them here today.

Devilishly Handsome Productions

Thembisa Cochrane from the deliciously named Devilishly Handsome Productions sent out a strong message that women need to be more courageous about technology.  She asked for women to step up and try to Continue Reading »

I tweeted a couple of thoughts last week about social networks and these caught the eye of creative Dave Black of Black Arts. There’s a lot of pressure for businesses to get to grips with the variety of social media ‘out there’ and embrace them all!  But is that the right thing to do?  Dave says (with a few edits from me):

“Social media and networks are pretty exciting and new – sort of. Talking isn’t really new. In fact, what “social” media do is model and facilitate existing ways of communicating and make them global. For example,

  • Twitter is the little comments and chats we have between our larger, more serious conversations.
  • Email is a letter – formal and private.
  • Facebook is meeting your mates in a pub where you all chat but other people can overhear you.
  • StartupCafe is a cafe – it’s chatty and informal, just as it should be. Continue Reading »
