colThis week’s willing victim is the lovely Mr Colin Gilchrist, my favourite local social media evangelist.  He’s the entrepreneur behind Tweetabits, a web-based Twitter search interface which allows you to tag and analyse tweets according to narrow search criteria.  Among other things, he used to own a clothes stall in Camden Market, London and has also worked as a fashion buyer for Burberry!  He has recently been invited to blog in The Drum magazine.

What’s your startup/company, and your role? Red Dress (and Tweetabits).  My role is Managing Partner, my adopted title: Social Tailor. Everyone in the team was given a job title by someone else in the company; I provide social marketing strategy for our clients and I studied Fashion Design in the 80’s… Continue Reading »

meerkatsIt’s about time we posted another Roundtable discussion!  This week we are asking: What wacky marketing campaign has amused or annoyed you lately?  There are truckloads to choose from, aren’t there?!  So let’s begin…

Jess: While Apple and Verizon have gotten flack for recent ads poking fun at their competitors, I must admit I am enjoying the bitchiness. I converted from PC to Mac two years ago after the Continue Reading »

Oh good, my food budget was running low!Between now and Thursday you can learn how to raise some money, run your business better, gain some techie skills, and communicate – all the while enjoying free coffee, wine, crisps, pizza, beer, and then more drinks. Monday and Wednesday evenings are my top choices, but there’s plenty to catch here so hope you don’t have too many hot dates lined up this week.

A proud geeky flat collection - Apple, LG, and Amazon (incorporated into a face)...Halloween is a chance to let your wild side out for a night with no explanation and no apologies needed. Well okay, that may be most weekends at Potterrow, but there’s a very diverse range of self-expressions on the 31st October that does not emerge on an average party or fancy dress occasion. As I see it, there are three defining elements to this fantastic holiday: the candy, the costumes, and of course the pumpkins.

The candy tradition seems to be largely overlooked in the UK, with the exception of six 10 year old children that wound up raiding our kitchen for anything edible and sweet (we refused to let them tap our alcohol stash – what is up with kids these days?). The costumes here were in full swing though, and I loved seeing pirates, puppy dogs, Teletubbies, and black eyed peas (yes, the beans) all celebrating at the same event. However, what I love even more is the rising coolness of technology-related ensembles: Continue Reading »

So knock yourself out, we’ve got fun for everyone in creative industries, mobile, angel finance, and brain/language realms.

MoMo Edinburgh informal dinner: Monday 2nd Nov, 6:30pm at Holyrood Tavern (9A Holyrood Rd, corner of St. Mary’s St)

Too cool for school - lovin the glassesThis week we caught up with Josh Wilson, an expert in gaming reviews and fine living. Bela and I had the honour of spending four days with Josh in Porto, Portugal for an entrepreneurship conference, and he certainly brightened up our trip. You may catch Josh in his new office at the ETTC or entertaining customers at Last Drop – he’s got a great attitude and we’re excited to watch SquareGo continue to grow.

What’s your startup, and your role?

Fidget Publishing Ltd (We make SquareGo mag and website) I’m MD. We publish videogame reviews that everyone can relate to. Mainly at www.square-go.com.

Give us your company culture in 3 words: Is it fun?

What’s the next big challenge or hurdle the company needs to overcome?

Get the new website up. Get people to it. Make it make money.

What’s the personal dream (in one sentence)? Continue Reading »

We're trying to get one of these... to make us better, and help you more!http://survey.io/survey/6c9ad

We have the privilege of attending a workshop tomorrow with Sean Ellis, a startup marketing guru visiting us from the Silicon Valley.

His talk tonight at E-Club was fantastic, and I’ll pause tomorrow evening to write up some of the wisdom and stories he shared with us.

I could really use some quick help though in the meantime. In order to offer you the best content here, we need a bit of a reality check on our current activities.

We’d be delighted if you can spare five minutes for this helpful little survey for us: http://survey.io/survey/6c9ad. Before noon on Thursday would be amazing, but later is still useful too. In exchange, we’ll do our best to save you hours of confusion and frustration by making events and resources more easily accessible.

Hugely appreciate your help, thank you!

Plus an ipod sock, unbelievable deal! We’ve been highly amused by the responses to our last competition, so thanks very much for your thoughtful rants on technologies you’d like to destroy.

There are several we’d love to follow through with!

Our winner this time is Tim Barlow, who submitted the following:

The fax machine. Or at least those that insist on it being more legally binding than an e-mail.

Has always struck me as strange as the company I am forced to send most faxes to is non other than Google.

An honourable mention for the modem. A device that sits in the corner making scushing noises as the only way to get online is bound to make a fine museum piece in due course.

The fax machine and Google irony there was just too laughable! We’ll allow it to have existed up until now, but let’s destroy it asap.

We also really appreciated Kevin’s well-argued submission about Continue Reading »

Hi Jeff, can you fill my shopping cart like that please?Whilst the Financial Times is busy publishing articles explaining how worse the British economy is getting, there’s a guy across the pond who made $2 billion last week. Is it true? Is it legitimate? The answer to these questions is yes. That guy is Jeffrey Bezos. He founded in 1994 a startup known as Amazon. Yes, that’s the Amazon you’re thinking of. ICT startup + angel = make lots of money!A prominent business angel from the Silicon Valley will be helping Scottish startups prepare for the angel finance journey. Thanks to Mike Clouser and Informatics Ventures, a cozy masterclass will be offered to 15 ICT companies on Wednesday, 4th November from 1:00-5:30pm.

The angelic instructor is Dr. Jim Papp, a member of the Silicon Valley’s Band of Angels and CEO of Podaddies, an angel funded video advertising company. Just to give you a reality check, according to our friends at Wikipedia, Band of Angels is the ‘oldest and most active angel investment group in the United States’ – not a small fish here. Jim is also an adjunct professor at University of California Berkeley, so it sounds like he can certainly walk the walk and talk the talk!

This is an incredible opportunity for any informatics companies who are beginning to raise angel finance or who are preparing to go down that path. If you’re interested, grab yourself a spot before word gets out! If this isn’t for you but you know someone else who could benefit, let them know so they don’t miss this chance.
