Oh geez that's a lot to keep track of. But hey, surely that means lots of free wine!No shortage of entertainment this week, and have a look at the upcoming events too so you can get your tickets booked in time. We’ll be at most of these, so hopefully see you soon!

Elevator Networking Event: Monday 26th Oct, 6pm at Why Not Nightclub (George St)

A free business networking club for folks 18-30 years old, these events are pitched at young entrepreneurs and people who want to set up their own businesses. Put on by Shell LiveWIRE and PSYBT, the event seems to be comfortably casual and probably a good laugh in Why Not. Do RSVP though by emailing edinburghelevatorbooking@psybt.org.uk to let them know you’re coming.

Oh man, I never would have caught all that! This week is set up in quite a logical order. First, channel your mental energy into creating some brand new ideas Tuesday evening with the help of iCUE and SIE. Then on Wednesday afternoon, learn about the market research tools that are at your finger tips, but that most people overlook. Wednesday night, cheer for your favourites at the E-Club pitching competition (£1000 at stake!), touch base with the developer world at TechMeetup, or skip both to celebrate commercialisation at the uni (who knew 14th Oct would be such a busy night?!). Then be inspired to keep the ball rolling with Thursday’s impressive speakers, and make some new connections at Edinburgh Coffee Morning (every Friday!) if you have some energy left – always worthwhile. Good luck!

Reward for a hard day's work![Reporting live from Darlington, half-way through a fantastic programme called Enterprisers, and enjoying facilitator responsibilities with a bit more experience this time…]

A lot can happen in a day when you’re surrounded by energy, potential, and of course strong coffee. We launched rockets in the morning, developed business ideas in the afternoon, discussed ethics this evening, and challenged ourselves to larger-than-life Jenga tonight alongside a piano sing-a-long. I think the sugar rush from a big bowl of jelly and chocolate ice cream is the only reason I’m still conscious.

The rockets were an absolute blast (pun intended), and I’ll try to get some photos up later on. However, it’s the business ideas that this afternoon’s brainstorm generated that I’d most like to share right now. Thanks to 7 subject prompts, 45 fresh minds, and hundreds of post-it notes, participants developed and presented 14 new enterprise possibilities. If you wanted to think about a new business idea every day, these would last you a fortnight! And they are… *drumroll* … (more…)

Whoa cool stuff! Glad I found out...Enterprisers is keeping Thomas and me busy in Darlington most of this week, but there are a couple terrific talks you should drop into. Hope you had a fabulous time at MoMo if you signed up and made it, and try to save some time/energy for Wednesday and Thursday events if you can manage. Read below and you’ll see why…

MoMoEdinburgh: Monday, 5th October, 12:30pm at Centotre

This month’s Mobile Monday lunch features Gavin Dutch of Loc8 Solutions, an Edinburgh startup that builds location-based mobile apps for iPhone, Android, etc. His team developed the Official Edinburgh Festivals Guide app for the summer festival madness, and we promise he’s a very cool guy. As well as discussing the hot topics of mobile apps and location-based services, Gavin will share some insights into the trials and tribulations of building a small mobile apps startup in Scotland. Milano lunch is included for a tenner – glass of wine, pasta, and espresso, but you need to pay for your spot online beforehand.

The Google Story (E-Club/School of Informatics): Wednesday, 7th October, 11am-1pm at Informatics Forum G07

Jeffrey Ullman kicks off this year’s Silicon Valley Speaker Series, the best lineup of entrepreneurs you’ll find in (more…)

If you’re not already booked into Girl Geeks Dinner or Enterprisers, don’t despair, everyone is welcome at E-Club mid-week and further entertainment is on offer in Glasgow Tuesday if you can spare the afternoon. While we’re thinking about events, be sure to book your MoMo Edinburgh ticket if you want to be part of the ‘in crowd’ next week.

NGN Scotland launch: Monday, 28th Sept, details TBC

Next Generation Network, run by the UK India Business Council, is launching a Scotland Chapter and the kick-off event is being held in Edinburgh. The network helps to connect and empower young business people/entrepreneurs by fostering cross-cultural understanding and building links between countries. We’re still waiting on details to be relayed (post below if by chance you know em!), but it’s great to see Scotland pulled into the loop and there should be more NGN happenings in the future.

Where do I go? Free what?If there were an occasion to use your time warping skills, this Wednesday night would be a good chance. With 3 2 great events to choose from, it’s a shame they’re scheduled for the same slot, but you are sure to have a great mid-week outing if you can make it to one of these. Anyone with a stake in cloud computing may like to check out Cloudcamp, Glaswegians gather for Tech Meetup, and we’re especially excited to see the Entrepreneurship Club season begin again. There is definitely something for everyone this week, so I hope you’re not hosting any Wednesday dinner parties.

E-Club: Wednesday, 23rd Sept, 6:30pm at UofE Business School LT1

This is the first Entrepreneurship Club event of the academic year and is open to all students, startups, and members of the wider community. An assortment of E-Club members will present their business ideas, so come hear what everyone is up to and meet some cool folks. Hey, StartupCafe will be presenting, so you can (more…)

Launch.ed logoCan you hear them? Yes, it’s the sound of freshers and the rest of the students coming back from their summer holidays. We thought we would ask Hilary Singer from Launch.ed what their plans are this coming semester … (oh and remember to check out their new website!)

LAUNCH.ed/iCUE Event Series

This year, LAUNCH.ed is teaming up with iCUE to offer a series of events to develop your practical entrepreneurship skills. So many events, I actually wound up asking for orange juiceThe previous week was absolutely packed with tech and business events (Events Menu here for a recap), and unless you completely abandoned all other obligations including sleep, you probably didn’t catch them all. Luckily for you, we were running around spastically to fit in quite a few… So in order to keep you in the loop, we thought we’d each share which event we liked most and what interesting things we took away with us. Our highlights below, but if you had a different favourite, add your thoughts too!

Thomas: Last week, we were lucky to be invited at RunRev’s annual conference, organised this year in Edinburgh at the Dynamic Earth. Three words: what a venue! I went to a number of events there before, but they topped everything (more…)

john_logie_bairdThis evening, Jessica, Thomas and I were at the launch of the 2009 John Logie Baird awards.  The short version: the JLB awards are for entrepreneurs with an innovative product with commercial potential. The long version: the word “awards” is quite mis-leading, as it seems like the winners have a whole bundle of support in helping to realise their idea/product into commercial success. From the launch speech, there were roughly 440 applicants last year, with something near 250 through the process.  Last year’s top Young Innovators were StartupCafe favorites Fraser Doherty (Superjam) and Amanda Jones & James Brown (RedButtonDesign).
