#SXSW Day 3 – the podcast

Its Day 3 into our South by Southwest adventures. Today, we recorded our podcast while standing in line at the temporary Apple store between East 6th St and Congress. We have shout outs for a bunch of people, including Lloyd Davis (@lloyddavies), Whitney Hess (@whitneyhess) and Marc Hemeon (@hemeon). We talk about what we got up to in our first day at the conference, with Jess heading off to Tim O’Reilly’s and WordPress sessions.

In the second part, we talk about the Ignite Austin talks with talks from (free) Ice Cream man, and we talk about what we’re looking forward to, including the panel sessions we’re attending (there’s a lean startup day on all day), meeting up with Jennie Lees (@jennielees) and the SXSWi opening party tonight.

Monday 7th March: Buzz from Mobile World Congress (Mobile Apps Group + Mobile Monday Edinburgh), 7pm at Inspace, UofE

This month will be a joint event with the Informatics Ventures Mobile Apps Group), and as such will follow their normal formula of an evening event, with beer and pizza to keep us going, in the wonderful Inspace. There will be no charge to attend but advance registration is required via eventbrite: http://momoedimar11.eventbrite.com/. The theme will be a series of three short reflections on what we heard, saw, and achieved at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona a fortnight ago, taken with a variety of interesting twists.

Tuesday 8th March: E-Club “What Entrepreneurs Should Know about Raising VC in Today’s Environment,” 6:30pm at Business School Auditorium

Trevor Loy, Founder and Managing Director of Flywheel Ventures, will equip the audience of entrepreneurs with the knowledge necessary to gain an edge in the venture capital fundraising process. What should entrepreneurs know before pitching and negotiating a deal with a venture capitalist? What should the entrepreneur prepare in advance, and how might he or she gain an edge in the negotiation process? These are but two of the questions to be answered in this evening’s talk. (more…)

A friend likes to call me contumacious.  I prefer to be described as willfully disobedient.  Both mean the same thing.  But which is easier to understand? Contumacious of course!  (Relax, I’m kidding).

I was cornered by a man this week who interrogated me for a while  before I thought it only fair to ask him what exactly he did for a living.  To my great irritation, he went on to ask a whole host of questions and make abstract statements, building up to the real answer. Several sentences later, I was still none the wiser, and my threadbare patience drove me to cry out (more…)

Let’s give a nice warm welcome to the lovely Diana Proca!  Some of you may recognise her from Launch48, an entrepreneurial events company that organises weekends which bring together designers, developers and business folk with the aim of launching a business in 48hours!  Most of the StartupCafe folk have participated and loved these events, so much so that Jess and Hilary helped organise the first Launch48 event in Edinburgh a few months ago.  Anyway, Diana has kindly given up a few moments of her time to share some of her experiences, offer some advice to startups and reveal a guilty pleasure…

Name: Diana Proca

Your role: Events Manager at Launch48

Give us your company culture in 3 words: enthusiastic, energetic, positive

How old is Launch48? Two years

Based on your experience of startups that are formed during Launch48, what are the most common / most repeated mistakes? (List 3 max)

1. being too enthusiastic but only for a short period of time
2. bad level of communication within the team
3. sticking to the initial vision and lack of flexibility

What’s the next big challenge that Launch48 has to overcome? (more…)

“If it weren’t for the last minute, nothing would ever get done…” Well the last minute has arrived, and TODAY, Monday 28th Feb [note a closing time of 5pm!] is your last day to apply to exhibit at the annual investor showcase put on by Informatics Ventures. They are looking for cool tech startups and spinouts from across Scotland, in the areas of software, mobile, computer science & informatics.
You can see a nice little video of last year’s event above, or here.
And if you wanted to apply to exhibit, then do so here: http://www.eie11.com/

They have promised more support than in previous years, no doubt due to feedback from previous exhibitors, and while I know some startups are boycotting participation I want to make sure you get your apps in if you intended to. Good luck!

There’s a wonderful conference on in London this June, and with an impressive lineup of tech & startup speakers I dare say the Inspire Conference is worth a trip across the border! Tickets are an investment at £299 +VAT (or £149 +VAT for students!), so I’m sorry it’s not a free event, but I’d encourage you to have a look and see if the connections and experience may be worth your while.

Running 7th-8th June, the Inspire Conference is brought to you by the folks that created Launch48, so we’ve been very impressed with them before. You can have a sneak peak at the speakers so far – including Michael Birch (founder of Bebo) and Alex Breuer (design editor of The Times) – and I’ve included more details from the conference team below.

Note the “early bird” price lasts until this Monday 28th Feb, so if you’re going to book eventually, the earlier the better deal you’ll get. Are you eager to go, but can’t possibly afford a ticket? *Please comment below if so!* We are putting out a call for help to Informatics Ventures, Launch.ed, and SIE in case one of them is able to help subsidise some Scottish entrepreneurs who consider anything beyond Tesco Value noodles to be a splurge. We hear ya!! Make sure you comment below or email me jess [at] startupcafe.co.uk if a subsidy would make a real difference – I can’t promise anything, but I promise to ask! More details: (more…)

Women only tech/web/startup events are well attended.  If these same women were to attend mixed networking events, the gender ratio of ‘typical’ networking events would start to improve and perhaps these wouldn’t feel quite so male-dominated.  I raise this point because men and women bring with them different qualities and it would be a shame not to be able to share and benefit from our differences. (more…)
