It’s with sadness that we’re reporting that the Hubdub team has decided to close their first product – news prediction site Hubdub – to focus on their second product – Fanduel. As Techcrunch reports here, Fanduel (which was launched around 6 months ago) has become a much more lucative opportunity for the 5-person team.

I have to confess, I did spend a substanial amount of time on Hubdub and am left missing my hubdub dollars. To give them a good send off, here are my three favourite prediction markets:

I’ve taken a week off from the world to spend time at Enterprisers, a fabulous creation of Cambridge University and MIT. It’s a bit business bootcamp meets American summer camp, and this rendition is taking place in nearby Stirling. Walking into the room, you’d have little sense of being in Scotland though as the remarkably international group has left the Brits a minority.

So, what is actually taking place here? You might say it’s a four day workshop to develop entrepreneurial skills. You might say it’s a business rendition of Obama’s ‘Yes we can’. Or you might say it’s a social opportunity for computer science, business, and artsy students. But more noteworthy than the actual activity is the bit of magic in the air – the world has come together and it feels like anything could happen. (more…)

The spotlight was on Edinburgh this week for a US radio show covering entrepreneurs. The BusinessMakers Show recently paid us a visit to investigate the entrepreneurial activity in our lovely capital and speak with a handful of local startups. [listen to interview online here]

Russ Capper – one of the hosts of The BusinessMakers Show – flew over from sunny Houston, Texas, where the show is based. Previous guests on the show have included Steve Wozniak of Apple, Malcolm Gladwell (author of The Tipping Point), and Carly Fiorina (former CEO of Hewlett-Packard)… so I’ll just let you conclude what great success lies in our futures.

I filled Russ in on why Edinburgh is so awesome, life at the exciting startup TenBu Technologies, and of course StartupCafe. You may notice I was caught off guard when he asked ‘So what do you do in your spare time?’. (more…)

It’s about time! Entrepreneurs in Edinburgh can now enjoy coffee, tea, cupcakes, and free wifi without having to stress about their weekly budgets or office rent. A new cafe, run by yours truly at StartupCafe, is opening its doors this weekend in time for an Easter themed celebration.

The cafe has been many months in the making, and with generous funding finally secured in the new year, we’re delighted to finally make this resource available to local startups. Whether you have an idea you want to develop or a business to grow, you can take advantage of the cafe’s hotdesk offering and of course the free coffee and cakes. Part of the space is sectioned off into meeting rooms, so you can have a more private area to meet with clients or think in peace when needed. How about storing papers and equipment? A vast number of lockers and drawers are ready to be claimed for your convenience.

We’ve been keeping it under wraps to (more…)
