E-Club’s biannual pitching competition is tonight, so you can go whoop, cheer, and safely learn from the 6 brave pitchees. You’re sure to recognise some faces – if you’ve ever been to an event in Edinburgh before – and even our own Kate Ho will be stepping into the den. The event kicks off at 6:30pm at the Business School (7 Bristo Square), Lecture Theatre 1, and it is open to anyone in the community.

Judges will be Cameron Thomson of Angel’s Den, Patrick Andrews of ScotSkills, John Hughes of Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce (High Growth), and Scott McLennan of Santander. So it could be worth going along if you’ve been wanting to meet any of them…

Prizes are exciting, with £1000 from sponsors Santander going to one lucky contestant, and free Angel’s Den registration (usually costing £799 + VAT) being awarded as well.

So, who’s pitching? (more…)

No need to RSVP, just turn up and catch wine and crisps at 8pm afterward. This week sees the adoption of Bloop to help with mingling, so that will be exciting too.

Hello again! I’ve spent the last month in a dark cave, a cave devoted to a mission, a mission to make an Edinburgh startup successful through a trade show in Las Vegas. Not just any trade show, but the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), an annual extravaganza for the technology industry where dreams and hope go to be discovered! They also go to watch the newest 3D Televisions and play the latest video games, but that’s just a distraction. As was the Adult Entertainment Expo conveniently taking place at the same time, but nevermind.

I really should have done a better job reporting live from CES, and apologies for not having managed, but I felt absolutely consumed by the whole experience (consumed… get it?). On the last morning, I could not find the strength to eat half a bagel – and believe me I am a big eater! Yet on that very afternoon I managed to speak with 8 distributors spread across the biggest exhibition space I have ever seen. Physically I was exhausted, but mentally I was determined. (more…)

The events schedule is calming down – thank goodness – but Wednesday is full of good options. You’ll wind up with free drinks (and maybe food too) no matter where you go! Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, you can actually get work done without worrying you’re missing out.

Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards: Tuesday 8th Dec

Can you see yourself on the awards programme for next year? A good list to aim for, the awards recognise Scotland’s best in a variety of areas from entrepreneurs to sports to music and arts. Last year’s winners include SuperJam’s Fraser Doherty, CoffeeLoop’s Peter Gregson, and Ewgeco’s Tanya Ewing. I’ll be crossing my fingers for Red Button Design in the environment category, and I’m torn between Vets Now and Purdie’s in the business lineup.

SuperJam Tea Party: Wednesday 9th Dec, 1:30-4pm at Jameson Place Sheltered Housing Community Lounge (just off Leith walk)

A successful Edinburgh startup + cute elderly people + more scones/jam than you’ve ever imagined… yes, a fun and random afternoon that (more…)
