Tablets and headphones and giant massage chairs… Oh my! It’s been a fantastic first two days at the Consumer Electronics Show and I thought I’d better press pause to mention some of the initial highlights. I’ve been wandering the halls in a whimsical fashion and crashing events wherever the wind takes me (ie. sneak preview event PepCom, Lenovo party, iHollywood demo party, CES tweetup) and I’ve been lucky to meet tons of great people along the way. Shout out to Paul, John, Craig, Jeff and Dave – you know who you are.

So, what’s the gossip?! My favourite innovation so far is KOR-FX “4D sound” from company Immerz, which may sound a little far-fetched but it is awesome. I experienced Iron Man 2 last night in a whole new way, and let me tell you, I’m sure I was physically there on the set! The tech consists of a headphone-like device worn around your neck, down near your collar bones instead of your ears. You play the audio as normal (via headphones, speakers) and the KOR-FX device vibrates against you so you FEEL the sound in your body in addition to hearing it audibly. You will feel directional input depending if the sound is coming from the right or left, which really brings the whole scene to life like a hologram jumping off a page. (more…)

First of all, whatever you’re celebrating, happy holidays! I brought the Scottish rain with me to California, so I’m not very popular back home right now, but sending lots of good wishes to Edinburgh and beyond this week. Hope you have a wonderful time filled with good food, good company, and some well-earned rest! Well ok, 2 out of 3 ain’t bad 🙂

Monday 20th December: Listening Lunch #2 & Christmas Drinks, 12pm on Appleton Tower 8th Floor

An invitation from Informatics Ventures to “get everyone’s input on things that Informatics Ventures could do to support you,” to hear what’s working and what could be improved. I know some folks are boycotting this meeting after the last one was – to put it mildly, disastrous – but I *hope* this one is more productive and less defensive. At the very least, enjoy a free buffet from 12 noon and drinks after the meeting. But watch what you say if you don’t want an eviction notice the next day (possibly unrelated, but a terribly unfortunate coincidence). You can see the online forum for discussions: Appleton Venture Community.

Wednesday 22nd December: Glasgow TechMeetup, 7pm at 103 Trongate 5th Floor

Monthly gathering for anyone interested in tech, from developers to startups to innocent curiosities. It’s a thriving grassroots effort, and each month generally features a small variety of presentations to share expertise on what people are up to and what they have learned along the way. Not sure what presentations are this month, but looks like it’s going ahead… Just turn up, and enjoy free beer, pizza and good chat! (more…)

Good news for startup land! Guardian blogger Michael MacLeod is set to join the Appleton Tower community starting this coming week. You may have met Michael out and about covering an array of stories in Edinburgh, from the tuition protests to tram updates to plans for The New Victoria.

While his remit is the wider Edinburgh community, I can’t imagine

The Marketing Industry Network logo

Regretfully, this event has been cancelled. Same old snow story. We will update again if it is rescheduled (and I hope it will be!)

Andrew Scott from Rummble gave an amusing talk at a recent event aimed at entrepreneurial folk interested in mobile and tablet technologies.  He talked about the DIRTY DOZEN – the name he’s given to mistakes he has made – and offered some advice to those wanting to develop mobile apps.

Depending on your perspective, Rummble is Andrew’s 5th or 6th startup so he’s got plenty of experience to share!

Here is what he had to say:

  1. Don’t choose a cr*p name – Scott once chose Playtex, which seems ok but in the UK it’s known for bras and the USA it is known for sanitary products…!
  2. Build amazingly on one platform – then you can go to a VC and say ‘gimme £3million to do this awesome thing on everything else’ 🙂 (more…)

In case you didn’t notice, I must also confess a mild obsession with holiday festivals, and have slipped in a couple of the local lights celebrations too 🙂

We were blown away last week by the Student Market, the new place for young entrepreneurs to get seen and promoted. We covered the project earlier this month, and their launch event last Thursday evening was absolutely superb.

The event was a chance for student entrepreneurs to exhibit their businesses, ranging from web apps to fashion to race car driving. With about 20 companies of all types on display, it drew an impressive crowd of around 200 visitors throughout the evening.

The Student Market is an online portal showcasing student businesses, but it’s more than just a website. It’s also events like these where student entrepreneurs can exhibit, meet each other, and speak directly to potential customers in a friendly environment. And beyond that, it’s the creation of a supportive community. (more…)
