Showcasing Scottish Mobile Talent: Monday 30th Nov, 6:30pm at Informatics Forum

At this special Mobile Monday event, MoMo Edinburgh is holding a series of short pitches by companies wishing to represent the group at the Global Peer Awards in Barcelona in February, followed by a series of short demos showcasing the capabilities of the companies involved. Will be lots of cool stuff being demonstrated. Looks like tickets are sold out, but you may be able to squeeze in if there are no shows.

Elevator Networking Event: Monday 30th Nov, 6:30pm at Why Not Nightclub (George St)

A free business networking club for folks 18-30 years old, these events are pitched at young entrepreneurs and people who are considering setting up their own businesses. (more…)

Going Back to (Startup) School

Also note that Y Combinator graduate Alex Ohanian, co-founder of Reddit, will be speaking tomorrow and Thursday in Edinburgh.

Not to be confused with Doug Richards’ UK-based School for Startups, Startup School is an annual event organised by Paul Graham of Y Combinator, an early stage investment firm in Silicon Valley. This year I was lucky enough to go along – as were 800 other people – to listen to pearls of wisdom dropped from an entrepreneurial A-list.

Paul Graham himself kicked the event off with a talk on what startups are really like – the key lessons being themes that are frequently cropping up in many startups’ lives, from finding the right co-founder (it’s like a marriage) to being surprised at quite how much of an all-consuming rollercoaster startup life becomes. Panel Discussion on Intellectual Property Rights: Monday 23rd Nov, 5:30pm at UofE Business School, LT1

Come to this panel discussion to hear a range of views about the issues surrounding innovation vs copyright. This event is held jointly between the E-Club and the Bathwick Group, and the list of speakers looks like an entertaining mix. Hear from the Head of School from Informatics, a School of Law professor, a law firm partner, the awesome hand-making startup Touch Bionics, and Scottish Enterprise. Crisps and wine as a reward for listening, and no need to RSVP.

Nicola met Prince Philip!

I’d heard rumours that he would be at the 40th Anniversary celebration for Edinburgh Research & Innovation, which took place in the Playfair Library yesterday, but I am totally shocked that it was true.

Luckily Nicola and Hasan of VidioWiki were armed with their handy Flip camera, and we got to have a look at one of the stills.

Global Entrepreneurship Week, oh my! So the free drinks are where?According to the forces of the universe, this week is Global Entrepreneurship Week! As it was very aptly put to me yesterday, ‘I have no idea why a gloomy week in November is supposed to incite entrepreneurship…’ but we’ll run with it for now. There’s a real mix of things to choose from this week, whether you’re in the mood for a reception, workshops, meetups, or award ceremonies. In the Entrepreneurship Week spirit, we’ll be kicking off some new features here at StartupCafe as well.

ERI 40th Anniversary Reception: Monday 16th Nov, 11am-1pm at Playfair Library

Edinburgh Research & Innovation, the university’s research and commercialisation (technology transfer) office, celebrates 40 years of exciting activity. Achievements in that time include developing the first genetically engineered vaccine against Hepatitis B, creating the Smart Wheelchair for children with severe disabilities, and pioneering the use of amniocentesis in pregnancy to detect birth defects. The party features an exhibition of the commercialisation highlights and I’m hoping there will be some free food/drinks as well. It’s open to all University of Edinburgh staff and students, and you do not need to register.

I am amazed there are still tickets available. With free food and drinks aplenty, a keynote from Ian Ritchie, and a celebration of folks that are helping the open source community thrive, 20th November is sure to be an excellent night at the Informatics Forum.

The Scottish Open Source Awards are fast approaching, and if you’d like to be part of the excitement, you’d better claim your ticket asap. The awards themselves will recognise individuals and companies who have made important contributions to open source and who have successfully utilised open source code in their software. High-profile speakers from the Silicon Valley have been offering extended workshops in a cozy setting – it is wonderful how spoiled we are over here. Our Valley guests work tirelessly while they’re here, offering a wonderful talk at E-Club one evening and then going into more depth for a select crowd. You’ll get the scoop from both the investor’s and entrepreneur’s points of view… enlightening us will be John Waddell, CEO of Archangel Informal Investment (Scotland’s leading angel investor group), along with George Mackintosh, a very successful business builder and seller. Webcast of TSB debate Digital Horizons: Monday 2nd Nov, 12-12:45pm Online

The Digital Horizons: Commercialising Innovation webcast is an interactive debate on the future of digital innovation in the creative industries. The Technology Strategy Board will be hosting panel members including Jeremy Silver (Technology Strategy Board), Rory Sutherland (Ogilvy and IPA), Fred Bolza (Sony Music) and Julie Meyer (Ariadne Capital). The debate follows the launch earlier this year of the TSB’s Creative Industries Strategy 09, which you can access in their public library if you feel so inclined. Webcast is open to all, but you need to Register here beforehand to join in.

Raising Business Angel Financing: Learning from the Band

ICT startup + angel = make lots of money!A prominent business angel from the Silicon Valley will be helping Scottish startups prepare for the angel finance journey. Thanks to Mike Clouser and Informatics Ventures, a cozy masterclass will be offered to 15 ICT companies on Wednesday, 4th November from 1:00-5:30pm.

The angelic instructor is Dr. Jim Papp, a member of the Silicon Valley’s Band of Angels and CEO of Podaddies, an angel funded video advertising company. Just to give you a reality check, according to our friends at Wikipedia, Band of Angels is the ‘oldest and most active angel investment group in the United States’ – not a small fish here. Jim is also an adjunct professor at University of California Berkeley, so it sounds like he can certainly walk the walk and talk the talk!

This is an incredible opportunity for any informatics companies who are beginning to raise angel finance or who are preparing to go down that path. If you’re interested, grab yourself a spot before word gets out! If this isn’t for you but you know someone else who could benefit, let them know so they don’t miss this chance.
