The Marketing Industry Network logo

Regretfully, this event has been cancelled. Same old snow story. We will update again if it is rescheduled (and I hope it will be!)

Next week, the Marketing Industry Network is hosting a speaker event on the union between brands and apps. The focus: how to design Smartphone and iPad apps to best promote brands.

A panel of experts will, despite the weather, be in attendance, including: Continue Reading »

The cover of Open Innovation, by Henry ChesbroughWe got a lotta snow right now. Hack together a sledge, make a snowman, have a snowball fight. And when that’s all over, grab a big chair by a fire and read a real, live book. Here’s one that’s worth your attention: Open Business Models: How to Thrive in the New Innovation Landscape, by Henry Chesbrough.

Two reasons to get your hands on this book now: firstly, Open Innovation is the focus of a new multi-million pound EU initiative for northwest Europe that launches this year Continue Reading »

Andrew Scott from Rummble gave an amusing talk at a recent event aimed at entrepreneurial folk interested in mobile and tablet technologies.  He talked about the DIRTY DOZEN – the name he’s given to mistakes he has made – and offered some advice to those wanting to develop mobile apps.

Depending on your perspective, Rummble is Andrew’s 5th or 6th startup so he’s got plenty of experience to share!

Here is what he had to say:

  1. Don’t choose a cr*p name – Scott once chose Playtex, which seems ok but in the UK it’s known for bras and the USA it is known for sanitary products…!
  2. Build amazingly on one platform – then you can go to a VC and say ‘gimme £3million to do this awesome thing on everything else’ 🙂 Continue Reading »

Anyone snowed in today with a cup of tea? Well get your boots and gloves ready – there are some events this week worth braving the crazy weather for! In case you didn’t notice, I must also confess a mild obsession with holiday festivals, and have slipped in a couple of the local lights celebrations too 🙂

FanDuel wins a Europa!

Not quite sure how we managed to miss this a week ago, but our very local FanDuel won a Europa (the European Startup Awards) for the Best Entertainment, Sport or Leisure Startup Category. The judge’s comment was:

Having though deeply about fantasy games, the old HubDub team pivoted into sports and came up with Fanduel. They now have a smash hit on their hands. At the same time they are proving that you can run a startup that looks like it’s from the US, when in fact it’s from Europe.

FanDuel beat off PickLive.com and ERepublik. Well done to the Fanduel team!

This week’s willing victim (I mean entrepreneur!) is final year student Gregor Wilson who is also the CFO and Partner of VAN DER, a small startup that will launch next week!  I posted an article about the company a couple of days ago.  If you haven’t had enough of a fix of VAN DER news then you’re in the right place to consume a wee bit more!

Name:  Gregor Wilson

Your role: CFO and Partner of VAN DER.

Give us your company culture in 3 words: Fashion-focussed, affordable, passionate

What’s the next big challenge that Van Der has to overcome? Expanding next season to include womenswear and a jeans line – (Startupcafe: I’m looking forward to the womenswear range!)

What’s the personal dream? To live a working lifestyle that I never want to give up, rather than having a ‘job’, and help others do the same –(StartupCafe: bit like us then!)

What’s the professional dream? To rival and surpass the major players on the highstreet and online. Continue Reading »

I’ll be heading off to the Launch48 Mobile Weekend which kicks off tomorrow evening in London (well actually Richmond, Surrey).  Here’s the programme if you’re interested in attending. There are still a few tickets if you want to turn up. If you’re afraid you don’t know much about mobile technologies fear not!  The event is as much about LEARNING as it is about doing.

Edinburgh-born Gregor Wilson has a busy year ahead of him, not least because he is in the final year of his joint business and law degree, but because his startup Van Der, an online fashion store for men, is due to be launched next week!

So who do Van Der have their sights set on?

  • Males aged between 18-28 who are fashion conscious but do not believe that fashion should be a chore. Their pieces are effortlessly cool, so you can be effortlessly cool.
  • People who might buy from other brands but actually want more quality, individuality and exclusivity at an affordable price.

Why would you choose Van Der?

  • For exclusivity: because collections are small, once gone they’re gone
  • For affordability: because exclusivity doesn’t have to be expensive
  • For quality and taste: because the clothes have clean and simple lines; the pieces are not ostentatious
  • For individuality: because the cuts of the clothes are different, inspired by a Scandinavian ethic Continue Reading »
