If we gave you £500 today, could you turn that into £5000 in four months? A cool entrepreneurial fundraiser from Fairbridge asks just that, and lets teams take the organisation’s money to (hopefully) add a zero to the end.

While you’re perhaps already busy playing this game with your own bank account, or an investor’s, I thought this sounded like a great challenge for friends/partners/siblings who could use a bit more excitement at work [update: students too!]. It’s open to teams of 8-12 people, so it should be good fun and sign-ups are now open – email gill.levy@fairbridge.org.uk. I’ve included the Zero to Hero flyer here for full details, so pass on some startup spirit and tell your corporate friends/partners/siblings to get involved.

If you have any wacky ideas of what to do with the money, but are lacking the time yourself, feel free to contribute thoughts below! Continue Reading »

Calling all developers, designers, business folks, marketers, social media strategists, students, and others enthusiasts who would like to have a ridiculously cool, meaningful, and kick-ass weekend…

Good news! It’s time Scotland got to experience the wonderful energy, magic, and startup creation that is Launch48. You’ve heard us blog about it before (here and here), and after enjoying our experience in London we are very excited the crew is crossing the border for the first time to run Launch48 Edinburgh at the end of October.

Hang on, what are we so excited about? Launch48 is an entrepreneurial event where participants have 48 hours to build and launch a web or mobile application. Attendees break into teams of 15-20 people with a mixed set of skills, and in the space of one weekend real businesses are created and launched. With teammates learning from one another, the event is open to everyone from serial entrepreneurs to young professionals to students of all subjects.

Past teams we’ve been a part of Continue Reading »

Taking over someone else’s product is hard enough but when all your staff work for free it’s even tougher. Phil Harris, SquareGo Editor-in-Chief, talks frankly about how he got the ear of the owner, took the reigns of the website, organised the staff, delegated duties, developed external relationships, convinced staff to join his team and dealt with crises whilst increasing readership. Now sitting close to his first set target for the year he discusses what’s to come and how lies, damned lies and statistics can be used to help you convince people to get on board. Free, and free wine…

Wisdom from John Mullins, author of Getting to Plan B and The New Business Road Test. Keynote speech at Stanford REE – by guest blogger Jill Robertson.

Most successful businesses result from the evolution of an idea over time from original concept of plan A, through multiple iterations to B, C ,D or more, rather than true execution of the original vision. How do you fast-track this process to reach a viable business model by stress testing the process of business plan formulation and factor in the ability to change course and adapt to changing market conditions and reaction to your product? Pirate's gold

Response to the discussion at the SIE-hosted session on entrepreneurship at institutes for higher education.

Part of our Stanford REE Series from the Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education.

One of the great advantages of starting a company at university is the wealth of human resource at arm’s reach. Student-entrepreneurs are surrounded by designers, engineers, web developers, marketers, and technologists. One question raised at the Roundtable on Entrepreneurship Education (REE) earlier this month was this: How can we manage this human resource to build more and better founder teams at universities?
